you know, I was psyched to see this post initially- then I read the article, & looked up E. faecalis- of course, it can make you terribly ill! I've been doing a lot of reasearch lately into pro-biotics, SBO's, things like that- it's extremely frustrating, there are so many "warnings" re. these strains. I really don't know how one is expected to make an educated decision on what probiotic supplement to take. Even that Threelac has some pretty scary reviews about it's use. I had some good results with Florastor a while back, had no noticeable change with long-term use of Culturelle, & have had so-so results with Primal Defense Ultra so far.

Eva Lou - I've had GREAT results with the Align...but the hard part is that I'm taking so many drugs and supplements, I have no idea which ones are working. I am going to start weaning off one at a time (just the supplements). I'm going to try the Threelac. I hope others that have used it can post on here.

right- I hear what you're saying- the way my GI explained it to me, was that I have a day-to-day "normal", & have been pretty much in static for many months now. My "normal" includes 4-6 extremely urgent bm's a day, blood & mucous daily, more gas than the average person, etc. So, if I start a supplement, & a week or so later, I notice that something has gotten better, or worse, I can pretty much attribute it to that supplement. Which makes sense. The big hitch I see for you figuring out if they help is the fact that you're on pred- while you're taking that, all bets are off. Have you been on the Align prior to pred use, or only since you've been on the steroid? Where do you buy it, Align? I couldn't find a local store near me on their website. Is it very expensive?

Actually I have to update my signature. I have been off pred for about a week. So hopefully I'll be able to tell when I start weaning off my supplements.

I started Align back in October 08. I started feeling better, but due to the cost, I decided to not take it. Then I got worse and ended up in the hospital Jan 09 and was diagnosed then. My GI recommended that I take Align at my follow up appt. I was taking Pred and Colazal at the time. I was feeling better but still going many times a day. After about 1 week on Align, I started having only 2 BM's/day. That was 2 months ago. I buy it from their website because no one else sells it cheaper.

On a side note - My bleeding and mucous did not stop completely until I started Rowasa. I believe the Pred and Colazal took care of the bleeding and mucous in the colon (I have left sided UC) and the Rowasa stopped it in the rectum. I further believe that the Align is helping with the urgency and frequency.

I have been doing well taking threelac.

It's been more than two months now actually. I have been on oxygen element max, threelac, and digestive enzymes. They are all for killing yeast in the digestive tract. You can give it a try.

I think they worked for me.

That Dr. Ohhira's stuff sounds pretty good- but I didn't read any reviews from any actual IBD patients, just people saying they don't get colds anymore, or acne. Hhm.. I'd really like S. Boulardi also- it's tough to find a probiotic that has that in it. I think that's why I bought the Primal Defense, it has that & some others I've been looking for. You can't really tell if it has the soil-based organisms in it- I think it may, but not sure. The price is not bad though, either. The search continues.... I'm going to hit my health food store this week & see what they have to offer.

VSL#3 is the gold standard and approved Probiotic, I take it here in UK on prescription.

Diagnosis Oct 07 and then Aug 08: Inditerminate Patchy Colitis. Also suffer from Peptic Ulcers could be related to Asacol. Current Medication: 500mg Asacol Suppositories, 800mg Asacol Tablets x 2 a day.

Tried most of them and if I take them by mouth, these are ones I take. Consistency is pretty nasty if you open one up and play with it. Then again, it should be, lol. Downside is they are expensive.

Decided today to stop the Primal Defense- the past 2 weeks have been rough, with tons of gas, bloody mucous, & more urgent bm's. And it dawned on me that it could also be because I stopped Culturelle- I never thought it did much, but since I stopped that & started the other stuff, things have gone totally haywire! So maybe it was helping, the Culturelle. I'm going to keep taking that, & pick up some S. Boulardi & maybe a bifido strain. I like Florastor- that's straight-up S. Boulardi. I just wish I could find a formula with those 3 strains in it & nothing else, no wacky organisms or bacterias. Plus one that's not prohibitively expensive! Like VSL 3.

I have been takign Primal Defense for a month or two and I don't find it helps tremendously but it hasn't hurt my situation. I think I might give some other probiotics a try and make some deitary changes. I have been a total sugar fiend lately. Maybe I have candida overgrowth.

I'm also wondering about the candida overgrowth. I CRAVE sugar ALL THE TIME. I can eat a whole bulk box of sweet-tarts AND nerds in one sitting. I also crave carbs.

How did you get it on prescription? i've asked my local GP (said see your specialist) and the specialist had a look on his computer and said it was not available/listed and didn't seem tto interested anyway...

Can you provide any help with this  I see my specialist again on Thursday could you provide your doctors name and phone number who prescribed ot for you? and/or is there some sort of NHS referance number? Anything else that would remove any excuess for my doc not prescribing it?

Thanks
Ian

Well I did a candida cleanse a few weeks ago but I guess it didn't help because right after the cleanse I ate a whole box of cookies... Maybe I need a stronger one.

Hahaha...what did you use? I have read that Threelac was good...but the negative press (it's banned in Australia) has me a bit scared. I think that the Dr. Ohhira's probiotic is also rated high for candida overgrowth.

I should try that Ohira stuff.

I used this: http://www.vitacost.com/Enzymatic-Therapy-Whole-Body-Yeast-Balance?csrc=GPF-763948082803

I don't know if it helped, as I said, I am still craving sugar.

The herbal pills are kind of crazy. I was burping mint and oregano.

men8ifr - It is available on NHS but you have to get your consultant to prescribe it. Only then can your GP prescribe it for you regularly.

For those wondering about VSL #3...it's available by prescription in the doctor writes the Rx for VSL #3 DS (much like getting regular motrin at the store, vsl #3 is the basic formula, but you need an Rx to get Motrin 800's so the DS formula is like the stronger of the two formulas). The DS is double strength. We get ours filled at the Wal Mart Pharmacy...some insurances pay for it some don't, but the DS formula is marketed for the management of UC and ileal pouches (my daughter has a Jpouch). That said, it is industrial strength probiotic, the Gold Standard as far as clinical studies and has kept her healthy as can be digestively since her takedown surgery, but you do have to go slow with it and take a little at a time until your body adjusts. She took 1/4 of a packet each day until she felt like she could handle more. She experienced more abdominal discomfort/gas etc in the beginning, but now has no problem at all with it. You're all on the right track...find a good probiotic. Many people on the jpouch forum who can't get vsl 3 for whatever reason use Culturelle with very good results. There's a battle going on in your gut and you need good bacteria to battle the bad (that's being fed by all of the sugar that you consume...try to cut back there...just my 2 cents and I hope this helps someone!
20 yo daughter w/ Pancolitis

men8ifr - I am in London mate. And it has nothing to do with the consultant whom I use privately. VSL3 will be on your GP's computer, you can ask any pharmacy and they will confirm. But you need a consultant to ask your doctor to prescribe it.

Diagnosis Oct 07 and then Aug 08: Inditerminate Patchy Colitis. Also suffer from Peptic Ulcers could be related to Asacol. Current Medication: 500mg Asacol Suppositories, 800mg Asacol Tablets x 2 a day.
