As much as I hated having to start pred, it seems to be making quite a difference.  I started on Monday (got two doses of 10mg each in), and yesterday only had four BMs...BIG change for me.  I was also able to make it through Monday and Tuesday nights without a BM, which is a big change.  This morning, I had a semi-formed BM...before, they were really watery.
For those of you that have insomnia as a side effect, when did it start?  I slept unusually well on Monday night and had a normal night's sleep last night.  I'm hoping that since I haven't had a problem yet, I won't develop one.  I think my body is so used to waking at night (due to having to pee 2-3 times during the last two months of pregnancy, then being up with a new baby, then being up to poo) that I still just wake up a lot!
Anyway, here's hoping that I can taper as quickly as my GI planned out!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Fruitgirl, got diagnosed with severe pancolitis last friday, started on 40mg Prednisalone same day have gone from 6 BM Sat to 4 BM Sunday 2 BM Monday and only 1 for both Tuesday and so far today. Prednisolone does the job for me really quickly, hopefully can control as I taper off but then get rashes / acne over body when closer to 10 mg then zero. Do suffer from sleepless nights, not sure if this is related to stress and the worry about the disease. Try and get plenty of fresh air during the day, I find it helps, but saying that I only got a couple of hours sleep last night.
UC first diagnosed 2007.
Asacol 3 tabs twice a day / Predisolone 20mg, 15mg, 10mg 5 mg
Flare-up Jan 2009 used Prednisolone came off it then had major flare up and developed gout.
Colonoscopy March 2009 reveals Severe Pancolitis.
Asacol 4 tabs twice a day / Prednisolone 40mg 2 weeks, 35mg 2 weeks
then start Azathioprine.

I usually had problems sleeping when on higher doses during a flare, not on my maintenance doses.  I would stay up all night sometimes and not be terribley tired during the day.  But when weaning it would seem to catch up with me and I would be pretty drained.  Just one of the many many issues I had with prednisone.  Good luck, and I hope you both feel better,

diagnosed 1998

I never had problems sleeping, but I did go to bed wondering how soon I could get up and eat breakfast when I was on a high dose. Pred munchies!
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.
Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.
