Well, I guess my question is - what to expect and how soon.
Last year I tried Canasa which only made me worse (and found out I cannot tolerate mesalamines).  So, on prednisone and 6MP for a short time.  I ask the doctor for extra help with rectal area.  I know where the problem is - very low.
He agreed that Anusol 25 might help.  I have problems administering enemas so I ask for suppositories.  They are not a problem.  He prescribed one before bed.
I used one last night.  Of course, no difference really this morning - just expelled residue from the suppository.  Had a slight feeling of fullness in my rectum for a while - one BM with mucous and blood (which I have been having since tapering to 20 mg. prednisone.)  Just wondering how long you thnk I should give the suppositories?  Might I get worse before getting better?

You're tapering the pred at this time?

I wouldn't give it a second thought for at least a week of using the supps.
If they don't work, you could maybe request the lidocane ones or maybe even proctocedyl...not for UC  but for hemmies.....it's at least a possible option since yours are limited.

Thanks for the info.  Tapered from 40 one week, 30 one week and now 20 for 3 weeks - next week going to 15 for two weeks, and then down 5 mg. every two weeks or something like that.

I have used the Anusol two nights and today LOTS of mucous/blood mixed in with normal looking stool.  Almost looks like "shedding" or something.  Not that comfortable in rectal area either - oh, probably allergic to it or something knowing me!  I will give it a few days unless it gets really bad.  Only having a couple of regular BM's a day.

yep, it's possible you're sensitive to something in the Anusol. Do you have the hcl Anusol or just the regular ones?

Tapering pred will give you some symptoms...do stick with the supps at least for a while to see if it improves...you're definitely a toughie with this stuff, but a fussy toughie..lol!

Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

I been on 20 mg. prednisone since Feb. 21.

I went and looked and it is Anusol HC.  No alarming side effects yet - just that mucous w/dark blood I hate so much has increased a little.

I like that "fussy toughie"!!  I will use the Anusol unless it gets unbearable just like I did the mesalamines, etc. etc. etc.

Do you have an opinion on fish oil?  I used to take it for my tryglicerides and then stopped.  I heard it might be good for the inflammation.

My doc suggests fish oil but I'm not sold on the fact that I do well on it..wondering if it's too much for my system or something...but I had been flaring, and have stopped it with no difference..so I started adding it again today to see of any changes happen with stool consistency. I'll take one daily for a week then twice daily.

I do know, however, that one requires lipase in order to utilise it. The one I have has lipase in it...(it's a digestive enzyme).

I wouldn't personally use cod liver oil...I go for fresh water/cold water and start with one dosage daily and increase to two. I believe taking it with food is better, but check the label.

The kind I use now is by Renew....called FishSmart. Only Omega 3. Calls for 1 - 3 daily...... No problemo from my doc regarding this product.

Let me know how it goes.
