That's why red food colouring has been a problem for ages....it is natural, however.

Well as we all know, not everything that's natural should be consumed...apple seeds are natural too but if you eat enough of them they will kill you.

Before I came down with UC. I stopped drinking energy drinks. Most of them have bat poo in it.

Of course it's true! Haven't any of you heard of carmine??? There are tons of animal products in our foods- for example, Guinness- you'd think it'd be vegan, right? No! It contains isinglass (I think that's the name of it...), which comes from fish. Just go to any pro-vegan site, like PETA, & you'll find lists of very commonly used ingredients that come from animals/insects.

bat poo? you're thinking of guarana....related to the coffee bean with twice as much caffeine..hence the ENERGY part of the drink. Not to be confused with guano...bat or other beastie poo.

It is amazing what we don't know, and totally scary the effects on our health that not knowing can cause us. I have a nephew that happens to be extreamly allergic to red dye/coloring from this beetles juice, it almost cost him his life at a very young age.

Research is important....of course we all know that all natural isn't good...a fact that needs to be brought to the attention of some from time to time. Many people are allergic to things in foods..as I mention often...good to do the detective work.

I just wish they would ban all the artificial food dyes & colorings- I'm fine with whatever "natural" ingredients they want to use! The US is practically the last developed country to allow artificial colorings- they've been proven to cause behavioral problems in children, as well as a whole host of other health problems. Someday.....

Eva Lou, it's pretty much a north american issues because Canada is no better when it comes to this particular food labelling and food additive issue either. I thought it was bad enough that they use it in lipsticks but to ingest large amounts of it (which if you think about it, most probably are in a day because it's in virtually everything processed that's colored) is even scarier than the odd licking your lips while wearing lipstick.

Alot of insects are edible. my question is what nutritional value is added with it??? i would probably rather eat bug pieces i didn't know i ate than a jaw breaker full of sugar...

Here's a very good, yet scary, article on food dyes & just how toxic they are- I go to that website, cspinet, a lot- they have a lot of good food info. I didn't realize Canada also used the fake dyes & additives! It's absolutely awful- I really think they'll be banned within the next 5-10 years.

I hope so Eva, it's sickening to know they put things into foods/beverages that are below standard just because it's cheaper. Especially when it's things that make some people very very sick...and to not even lable it as what it actually is.

I don't mind eating insects that are crunchy. I ate beetles stuffed with sweat potato in Taiwan once. They were okay. Kind of crunchy. Not much meat. It's worms that gross me out. I wouldn't want to eat worms or bat poo for that matter.
