Can medications for UC cause chest pain?  I am not having trouble breathing and no pain anywhere else.  When I am still it isn't to bad but when I get up and move it is very painful and bending over is out of the question.

Has anyone else experiened anything like this from Asacol, Rowasa and Prednisone?  I have never in my life had this feeling.
Diagnosed Friday, February 13, 2009

Prednisone 20 mg

No. It doesn't feel normal. If I take a deep enough breath it hurts. If I stay still it isn't bad but when I get up and move it is a stabbing pain.

If it were me I would think I either had a rib out, or strained an intercostal muscle. Either can cause that pain.

I had this back in November. It was a combination of 3 things - I had strained a muscle while working out, and whien doing so I also popped a rib. My chiropractor was able to help me with the ribs, but I was still in a lot of pain. It scared me enough to go to the ER, and after 12 hours of tests they told me it was a muscle strain. They gave me Darvocet and sent me on my way. The third contributing factor was I get arthritis-like pains in my shoulders due to inflammation caused by having UC. The Darvocet helped that too.

My suggestion is to try ice. Many people grab a heating pad first, but ice will help ease any inflammation causing the pain.

Good luck to you! I hope you feel better soon!

Or it can be pleurisy. I used to get that alot and boy is it painful. I haven't had it in quite some time but I'm not complaining. It hurt really bad when taking even a shallow breath.

But have you been excersizing lately? Doing anything strenous?

I get various types of chest pain...and anything that I cannot relate to gas or muscle/nerve pain, I call the doctor.

So, call the doctor and get in to have an x-ray done to get the all clear.

I've had a collapsed lung....so, I know extreme chest pain, but I've never had pneumonia or pleurisy...both of which can cause pain that to me would be out of the ordinary.

Chest pain can also be from gallbladder or liver...so you best deal with it quickly.

Yes, there are conditions that apparently are UC/mesalamine/pred related, so finding the reason will definitely ease your mind from guessing.

Please let us know what's going on...

Years ago I had some temporary arthritis in my rib cage caused by UC, which caused discomfort with movement and with each breath. A prescription of Voltaren cleared it right up.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), trying Curamin.
Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, down to 10 mg. Waiting for insurance decison on Humira...

I called the doctor. From what I am describing he thinks that the prednisone may be causing some stomach issues with acid reflux. He wants me to try zantac and call back on Monday. Of course with the instructions if it gets any worse to go to the ER immediately.

Very high possibly it is a side effect of one of the drugs you are taking. Asacol gave me wierd pains in my side around my kidney area and then at times I would feel short of breath. After stopping Asacol for about 3 days it went away.
