Greetings all. Thanks again for making this such a great board.

My first ever "Help Me!" post.

I have been an unsuccessful prednisone weaner for almost two years now. Usually get down to about 5mg/day and then all hell breaks loose (literally).

This time, however, my stomach is rumbling and making noises on a level that's never happened before. Really loud stuff that would just embarrass the hell out of me if I didn't have an office. Sometimes, but not always accompanied by bad gas. Those who have heard them are actually shocked.

I'm fearing something may be going on in there that's worse than usual. Can anyone relate? Accompanied by the usual morning awful-ness of diarrhea, then occasional attacks during the day. Went back up to 20 mg pred, for a couple days, but nothing yet.

Is it your stomach or your gut? (down lower) My gut will rumble and groan sometimes, loud, too. My hubby laughs, I shrug, usually it means a bathroom visit soon! I guess my work environment is too noisy, I never hear it there. I guess I'm saying it is not at all unusual, just part of the disease.

You may have seen me suggest 1/2 an immodium in the morning, after the morning awful-ness, if you want to limit the attacks during the day. It's enough to calm the system but not shut things down so much that you are uncomfortable.

Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, down to 10 mg. Waiting for insurance decison on Humira...

If you use prednisone often then it can stop being as effective, and higher doses may then need to be taken. So, when I used prednisone the first time I started at 40mg and then tapered down. The second time I was told to start at 60mg instead, and then tapered down.

I was having the same problems as you below 10 mg, and was still advised to get off it as the doctor did not want me taking it for more than 3 months straight. Also, his advice was that for however long you are on a course of prednisone, you should then take a break off prednisone that is at least twice as long before getting back on it, if at all. e.g. 3 months on, 6 months off.

What other meds are you on? Have you gotten a second opinion on your treatment options - because 2 years to taper off one course of prednisone is a very long time.

You could go back to the 10mg maybe and alternate tapering...
19, 5, 10, 5, 10, 5, 5, 5, ....etc

When you want to get to the next incriment, do the same process.

You might want to ask the doc for rectal meds to help keep that area calmer while tapering. Maybe the steroid enemas since it will have a teeny bit of the steroid absorbed into the bloodstream via the colon. That amount might help the tapering of pred.

Hope you feel better soon,
