Hi all, it is nice to find so many warm-hearted people here.
I was diagnosed proctitis UC last Oct. and my major problem is bleeding...

After I was put on Canasa 1/day, it works fine. Normally, I have a little
blood 1 or 2 days during a week. I hope I am recovering...

Now, I found that stay up and sex may worsen my bleeding. Last Friday,
my wife and I had a great sex and we talked a lot while lying on bed.
I went to sleep at around 2:30AM. Normally I went to sleep at around 11PM.
Then I found much more bright red blood when I went to bathroom the next day.
This is weird... Do you think stay up and sex make your symptom worsen?
I am trying to figure out the exact thing that may worsen my blood and will visit
my GI next Tuesday.
Any input is appreciated.

Since I am not a native, please ignore my grammar mistakes. :)

Not getting enough sleep can lead to your body not having sufficient time to rest and recover, and may cause an increase in symptoms; however this could also have just been a one-off occurrence for you.

So, before arriving at any conclusions, you could test your theory a few times. If it then seems like there is a link then cut down on the pillow talk. I'm sure your wife will understand....ahem.

Seriously though, I doubt there is a link, but you should still try to get that bleeding under control.

What other meds are you on?. Since canasa seems to be helping you, have you considered doing canasa twice a day, especially after a bad day?

I know that sleep plays a major role in how my guts behave. Lose a couple of hours and I'll pay for it - maybe just with extra bms.

I haven't noticed major differences after sex - maybe some additional cramping, but that could be because female parts are so close to the colon.

BTW - Welcome to Healingwell!  We're glad you found us :)

Big Panda - Yes, I have also found that staying up late causes my UC to worsen.  And I have also noticed that having sex can sometimes lead to a worsening of my symptoms the next day.  Very annoying.

I have definitely noticed that late nights have an impact on my symptoms. If I am tired, my mornings are terrible - I could be in the bathroom every hour. As for the sex, the only issue I have is cramping once in a while right afterwards - but I agree with dakotagirl in that its probably due to the organs' close proximity in a female's body.

I've noticed that too, having more blood when I'm flaring after either staying up or having sex.

I take back what I initially thought. So, apparently for some people having sex can aggravate their symptoms.

Observe what happens in the area of your proctitis when you as a male have sex particularly upon orgasim. I would posit this is a mechanical exacerbation of your proctitis which causes the bleeding. I would not be very concerned.as this should be temporary and not a causal factor in the degree of inflammation in this area. A good nights sleep is always beneficial and so is a loving relationship with your partner.

I do notice the cramping with sex. Sometimes during (very mild), after and sometimes the next morning. I don't ever notice an increase in symtoms when I don't get much sleep though. Maybe it's because I can't remember what it feels like to get a good nights sleep anymore. I haven't gotten more than 4 or 5 hours straight sleep since I became a mom!

I haven't had bleeding for over a year now (yay!), but until I read this post, I never made the connection between not enough sleep and/or sex and an increase in frequency until it occurred to me that yesterday, after a really bad night of trying to sleep, I did have a 100% increase in having to go.... Will have to make a mental note for future reference...

Thanks for that, these are things that if you bring up with your Gastro, Colo, or GP, they just look at you like you're from another planet ! :)

Same with me, now that I think about it.  Shortened sleep or at least a majorly interrupted sleep causes weird feelings in my colon - sometimes a distended, bloating feeling.  I'll be sure to increase the sex thing...just to see if it makes any differences (who am I to argue with this experiment?).
