in a recent thread i read that many women believe that it seems that child birth is a trigger for most women- i'm the mom of a daughter that had her first flare at age 19-
and since then i have met many other moms who's daughters are in the same position and have not had children-many were even younger-2, 4 10 ,12 ...
it may be a trigger for some , but please note that it's very common in younger girls too pre pregnancy -in fact i think that one of the common age brackets is mid teens to ealy 20's.
just felt compelled to write this-thanks

ah i don't think anyone meant to say that UC can't be triggered pre pregnancy or without ever been pregnant. I just think it was stated that when the time DOES come for pregnancy.... the hormones can play a big part in UC showing up when it's been dormant all of a woman's life...

Also, if PRE pregnancy you already know you have UC.... I've heard it said there's about a 1/3 chance of staying where you are when you entered the pregnancy, 1/3 chance of going into remission if in a flare when you got pregnant, and 1/3 chance of flaring after getting pregnant....just what I've heard...as I've never been pregnant myself.

I was diagnosed at 19 and am now 22.
Kara, 22F Married.
Latest-Went to ER cuz I couldn't eat for 5 days and was having severe flare up after passing two kidney stones after a week of the flu. (long month)
GI tried to taper me off of pred fairly fast in hopes to keep me on Lialda and at a lower dosage of pred. to try mesalamine enemas again.  Starting the Imuran as soon as labworks done... longer pred time....yippee *rolls eyes*
Medications:Prednisone 40mg Again! (groan)Lialda 4 a day until Imuran
I am so sick of this disease!

My first flare started about four weeks after childbirth, but I don't believe that it's the initial trigger for most women. HOWEVER, I do believe that many women who have UC end up in a flare after childbirth due to the hormone wackiness.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

yep, i am flaring now after giving birth but i was diagnosed 9 years ago. i havent read any threads that seemed to imply that the only reason women are diagnosed is because of childbirth.......but then again i havent read all the threads either.
