Two years ago I started having cramping, frequency and blood in my stools. Colonoscopy at that time showed mild non specific colitis and I was started on Asacol.  Symptoms became much worse and I stopped the Asacol.  Improved for a year or so then the symptoms returned with a vengeance.  I had another colonoscopy done three weeks ago that showed moderate proctitis and mild to chronic colitis with edema to 35 cm.  This was as far as the gastroenterologist could go because of inflammation and concerns over perforating the colon.  I also have diverticular disease.  I landed in the hospital for two days last week over severe left sided pain following a barium enema.  Dx. for that was diverticulitis brought on by barium.  My dr. keeps using the phrase ulcerative colitis, but in the discharge summary from the hospital he still says non-specific colitis.  I have a lot of surgical history due to gyncological issues.  My question is....is it ulcerative colitis and how would that by identified?  Any input would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Sometimes it can be hard to determine what you have even by scope or microscope. But the result is the same in regards to medications. Your question should really be addressed by your doctor - explain your confusion and maybe he can clear it up for you.

Thanks for the reply and I am, of course, preparing a list of questions for my dr. at my next appointment. I am just seeking info regarding the difference between nonspecific and ulcerative colitis because I think the prognosis is different.

At this time, it may be that your doctor just doesn't know which type you have. Not that it's good to have any sort of colitis but I sincerely hope that it's NOT UC. Because other forms of colitis have a chance of being cured while Uc doesn't.

Our doc called it "indeterminate Colitis" even after the colonoscopy---that clearly showed ulcers and a problem colon. Seems like it took the expensive test from Promethius labs to get them to officially call it Ulcerative Colitis. And Sheri's right, nothing about the treatment changed. It did put Crohns on the back burner though.

Yes and he immediately said that he wanted to refer me to a teaching hospital in Dallas for follow up. I am really not sure what that is about. I think that he suspects adhesions from my previous four abdominal surgeries are compounding the problems with my colon. I appreciate his willingness to bring other people on board, but I am a little freaked out as well because he treats ulcerative colitis all the time and I am wondering why I am "special"...lol.
