Hello,

I know there are many who have lost a large amount of weight on here from their UC. Of course losing large amounts will show up all over the body.

My question is; I've lost only about 8 lbs and it appears that I've lost a lot on my face. My cheeks are beginning to look hollow/sunken. I'm a bit of a hypochondriac but I've been looking back at pictures from not very long ago and my cheeks didn't look like that before.

Anyone else ever have an issue like that with losing weight, (UC or not) where your face almost shows it the most?

Thanks for any responses!

I lost 30lbs last summer due to a major UC flare. And that's a lot on my small 120 lb frame. My face looked really sunken in, but the rest of my body reflected the changes as well. My arms were pencil thin, clothes hung on me like a scarecrow. It was disgusting. Funny part was, when they tried prednisone, the "moonface" side effect actually made my face look normal again, lol. It took a few months for the rest of my body to catch up. I've actually only gained back 25 of those 30 lbs so far. I need to build up my strength to get the rest of it back.

When people lose weight, they often lose weight at different paces in different areas. The face and upper body often show the effects faster than the waist and lower body.

At my sickest, I lost about 15 pounds. Doesn't sound like much, but for someone who was already too thin, it was devastating. I gained it back - and then some - by tweaking my diet to include healthier choices, more protein and lots of healthy fats and added in a heavy weight training program to put on healthy muscle mass.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Yep I lost alot of weight although I didn't realise just how much until now that I'm starting to get better. I've just had 8 weeks off work and on coming back people keep telling me that I've put weight back on (have been on steroids for the past 6 weeks). They said I was looking really gaunt and thin on the face etc, and thinking back they are right! I think often you don't realise just how ill you look until you get better and think back!

I am about 25 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight. I can't be sure how much of my weight loss is due to the UC or due to post-pregnancy weight loss, especially because I breastfed my son for about 8 weeks until I lost my supply because I was so sick. Anyway, my face got quite guant looking as well, but I also lost a lot everywhere. I'm a full pants size smaller and a bra cup size smaller.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

UC itself can/will cause weight loss but if you have been adjusting your diet trying to cut back on sugars, fats etc to try and help with UC symptoms, this within itself can cause more weight loss.

Which is one of the reasons why it's a good idea to increase healthy fat sources when you lower carbs/sugar. The other reason is to reduce inflammation. Fish, flax and olive oils are great. So are nut butters, nuts (if you tolerate them) and avacadoes.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Oh, princesa, you've made me so happy! I've been on a big guacamole kick lately (I make my own), so at least I can now say that it's good for my UC! :)
