I am 25 and was recently diagnosed with universal ulcerative colitis. I am highly allergic to asacol and colazol and  am in the process of coming off prednisone so my doctor would like me to start 6mp. I do not feel comfortable with the lack of information on this drug in regards to its role in causing birth defects and was wondering if anyone had any additional info or would share their personal experiences. I do not intend to be on this drug when I try to conceive and would prefer not to take it at all prior to having children if possible.

Since the early 2000s this drug has been determined to be safe at the levels UC patients take it. I took it in the 1990s when not much was known about long term side effects and was concerned. I took it for 2.5 years and had no immediate or latent side effects. You should discuss this with your OB/GYN if you are planning on getting pregnant.

Sue
dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

Here's a short article discussing 6MP use in pregnancy which suggests it's fairly safe, but I can understand that you are nervous.

http://gastroenterology.jwatch.org/cgi/content/full/2003/325/1

However, it's likely that you'll have to be on some sort of maintenance medicine to keep your UC under control, and prednisone isn't something that you can stay on long-term as the risks to your health would be too great.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Fruitgirl,

I am looking at beautiful ultrasound pictures of our nearly 12-week (in utero) baby taken today at my OB's office. Baby had all 10 fingers on the u/s and a beautiful face with no sign of cleft lip or palate, and a nicely developing spinal cord. In other words, baby is looking healthy, all 5.4 cm's of him or her, so far. I'm on imuran, which is a variant of the 6MP that you're on.

I too was terrified before trying to conceive, and have been approaching this pregnancy with more than a teeny bit of apprehension, but my fears subside a little more at each prenatal visit. A MFM doctor (maternal & fetal medicine--also known as a "high risk" OB-GYN) will be a wealth of information to you and is well worth a visit when you begin thinking about babies.

Hope my (so far) success story relaxes you a bit--
Erica, 32
Pancolitis, diagnosed July 2006, at age 29
(Colonoscopy January 2008 showed active disease just in sigmoid and below!)
Imuran & colazol daily; Rowasa and/or canasa rectal meds as needed for maintenence
Currently pregnant-due October 2009

tooth fairy, it wasn't me with the question, but I'm so glad to hear that everything looks great on your 12-week u/s! My son was born on October 13, so maybe our kiddos will share a birthday! :) It makes it all feel so much more real when you see the little bean on the screen, doesn't it?! And just wait until you feel that first movement...it's such a thrill!

nymomof3 - sounds like you as jas had the same side effects and doctors' reaction I did to mesalamines (5ASA).  Doctor told me to hang in there - it would get better - nothing doing!  I had flu-like symptoms, nausea, sweating, etc. etc. and could not hardly get out of bed after about 4 or 5 days of trying each one - Colazaol, Lialda, enemas, etc.  So, FINALLY he decided I could not tolerate them and I went on prednisone and then 6 MP.  Adjusting that now but doing ok!
