A perfusionist is someone who controls the heart and lung machine during cardiac surgery. I'm assuming that would require an education like mine, 3 years of on campus classes and a year of clinical training. Its probably not offered at many schools so he would probably have to search pretty hard.
No matter what biology degree you go for, its going to be pure hell, especially in the medical field!! tongue However even though its been rough I absolutely love being a biology major and wouldn't trade it for anything.
My school doesn't offer biological engineering but we do have biotechnology which is basically the same thing. He'll have to take a ton of chemistry, probably general, organic, biochem, and maybe polymer?
The best thing to do to get educated is go the websites of the schools he's interested in and look under the academic programs. They usually give a description of the degree and the required classes etc.

Thanks Sam :) My son is a bit tight lipped and all he told me is that a perfusionist is someone who controls the machines in the operating room - and even that took a bit coaxing to get that out of him! lol He already took the ACT's and found 3 colleges nearby us that offer the Bio-Engineering major. Well actually one of them is out of state and therefore 3x's as expensive then the ones offered closer to us. On his ACT result sheet it stated which other classes he would have to take and luckily one of his strong readings was in science. I just hope he's up for the challenge! :)

It really sounds like he's into biology on the medical side of things, but if he's at all interested in plant genetics or plant biotechnology, let me know! I do have a bro-in-law who is a protein crystallographer (studies the shape of proteins), so I know a bit about the training required for that.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).
