Since I bet this is where I'm going (though I'm crossing my fingers) next, I was wondering if anybody been able to get off them and be fine on Anti-Inflam level drugs? I'd rather not be on it too long.
UC since 2006

2009 UC Pancolitis though Primiarly Left Sided, Active Moderate

Current Meds: Lialda 4 tab a day
Predinsone (40 mg a day) since 3/30 Not doing anything, hopefully something soon!

Current Supplements:
Vit. B-12, Vit. D3, VSl#3 Probiotics

What does remission feel like, I don't remember!

Nip UC in the bud with diet before it nips you in the bud (or butt) for good!

By the way to clarify, if you've been on any drug in the 6mp classification level than I'd like to hear to.

I have been on azathioprine 18months,and I'll be very interested in peoples responses,my GI made it clear he would have me stay on it indefinatly,as long as my bloods are ok,and in my case I still have not acheived full remission, he says he has had patients on it 8 years or longer, and people, that have come off it and had to go back on,he seems totally unconcerned about, possible side effects, and says only that in his experience when people come off azathriopine the UC ussually flares up much worse than before, which in my case would mean surgery

What Annelise said, is what two GIs have told me. If you go off of immunosuppressants, you will more than likely flare very badly and it will be harder to get under control. I went off of 6MP for 3 months and I didn't really get worse but I wasn't getting better either. I just started taking it again last night.

My son's doctor told him to wean himself off of the 6MP since he is doing Remicade now, and it seems to be helping. I guess we shall see if when he gets off it, what happens. Does anyone here on Remicade still
take the 6MP too? Since one of the side affects of 6MP is diahhrea and loss of appetite, my son is hoping that part will improve.

I took myself off the 6MP and Colazal last year and developed the WORSE flare ever.  When my symptoms started again, I went back on the meds...too late.  However, when I was admitted to the hospital, my pancreatic enzyme levels were at a very high level and my GI doctor immediately took me off the 6MP.  He placed me back on the 6MP about three months later.  For some reason or other the enzyme levels had returned to normal by the end of my hospitalization.  I don't know whether this was just some fluke in the test or what.  This was at the end of last summer.  My white count is kinda low...2.9.  I lowered my 6MP dosage from 75 to 50 one day and 25 the next.  White count is still low.  By the way, I have been on 6MP for over five years.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

Yes I think that is the only time my GI would be ok with me coming off azathiopine,if I try remicade, but that would only be if I thought I was getting no benefit at all from the aza,and I think that I've had alot less bleeding since I've been on it,all the other things like you say the diahrea etc,I don't know if it is the UC all the drugs I've had,or maybe I'm thinking I could have gone on t o develop IBS as well.
