I have a question for those of you whom have more experience dealing with pred than I (I was previously on prednisone 6 years ago (60 mgs) and it was successful in inducing remission until now....).  I am on 40 mgs (my new GI said this is the max he prescribes since the side effects outweight the benefits over and above this amount apparently) and have been on this dosage for three weeks.  Things are pretty well healed it seems - down to two movements a day and well-formed but with trace amounts of blood in/on the stool on occasion (once every couple of days).
I am wondering when I start tapering off if things are just going to get worse again (in light of the fact that there is still a small amount of blood in the stool) or not?  I am guessing it varies from person to person.  Maybe I won't know until I try?  What are other people's experiences in similar types of situations.

I recently was on a 40 mg taper, I didn't get any worse when I started reducing the dosage or even when I stopped taking it completely. I'm going once to twice a day still, no blood noticeable, though I think I might be occasionally getting mucus. However it is my understanding that my case was pretty mild.

Good luck, I hope you stay feeling better.

about year ago I was on prednisone for first time and I started only on 20mg and it helped amazingly even when I was taking only 10mg a day, but without prednisone things started to get worse slowly and now about year since I was for first time on it I'm on prednisone again, this time 30mg and going down by 5mg ever week.

I was on 40 mg. for one week, 30 mg. for one week, 20 mg. two weeks and bleeding (that had gone about 4 days into 40 mg.) returned mixed mostly with mucous but every day since.  I was on 20 mg. for 4 weeks when doc also put me on 6MP - 50 mg. (this is supposed to kick in and take over as I taper prednisone).  After trying to get someone on the phone about tapering when bleeding again - I decided to raise prednisone to 25 mg. on my own for a week or so and then try calling again.  This is so different for everyone I find from reading here.  I also have a mild to moderate case, I think!  Two days on 25mg. and less blood today but also only one BM (small at that).  I will give it the weekend anyway!

Started on prednisone Feb.7, 2009 - tapering to 20 mg. for two more weeks. Bleeding returned - no call back from doc so I upped prenisone to 25mg. on my own - 6MP - 50 mg. 4/2/2009
