I am just curious how long a lot of you were on 40mg of prednisone before you started to taper.

My Dr. put me on 20mg but this weekend was HORRIBLE to the max!!!  I started 40mg on my own Saturday and stayed on this dose through today.  My GI is out of the office today.  I will try to call tomorrow.

My husband and I are leaving for a much needed vacation on Friday.  If I don't get in touch with the GI just wondering how long I should try the 40 mg before starting to cut back.  I have plenty to stay on 40 until after our trip but I hate to stay on it any longer than necessary.

I did 40mg, 30mg, 20mg, 15mg for five days each. I dropped down to 10mg yesterday and am doing fine so far.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Thanks fruitgirl!! I am feeling much better but mornings and still a nightmare. Once I get past the first couple of hours I"m pretty good to go (or not go..LOL) during the day. Sometimes evenings can get a little tricky.

I guess I'd call your doc, too and see what he says. Basically, from what I've read, it seems like if your symptoms start to come back when you try to taper, it's best to bump back up for a few more days, then taper more slowly (ie drop down by fewer mg).

I've always done 40mg for the first 2 weeks and then tapered slowly...tapering slowly is the safest way and usually the most effective as well.

:)
My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

I guess this is all a guessing game. I will put in a call to the Dr tomorrow but he isn't always quick at getting back. I am in the process of trying to find a new GI in my insurance network, but our insurance is changing so I have to wait until all the paperwork is processed before I can do anything.

i've been on 40mg for two months... im going crazy. But I feel like if i taper down right now I'm going to get tons of bad symptoms....because 40mg isn't really helping me right now anyways.

Latest-Went to ER cuz I couldn't eat for 5 days and was having severe flare up after passing two kidney stones after a week of the flu. (long month)
GI tried to taper me off of pred fairly fast in hopes to keep me on Lialda and at a lower dosage of pred. to try mesalamine enemas again.  Starting the Imuran as soon as labworks done... longer pred time....yippee *rolls eyes*
Medications:Prednisone 40mg Again! (groan)Lialda 4 a day until Imuran
I am so sick of this disease!

I was trying to taper but then flared again really badly, so upped to 30, then 25 with some success...then talked to my doc (via the nurse) on Friday about what had been going on. Her instructions were to take 40 for one day (which I did Friday), then 30 for about two weeks then report back. I'm doing much better.

Maybe this would work for you. You were smart to go ahead and up it when you got worse and not wait.
How wonderful to have a vacation coming up! You'll be fine....
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), trying Curamin.
Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, tried to taper but now back up to 20-30 after several really bad days. Waiting for insurance decison on Humira...soon...
