For those of you on Lialda, does it work as well for you as Asacol did?  I'm contemplating asking my doctor about switching, because at the CCFA conference I attended yesterday, I got a card so that I will only pay $25 out-of-pocket after insurance.  I hadn't wanted to switch before, b/c with my insurance Lialda is a $40 copay and Asacol is $20.  For $5 difference, I'd rather be able to take my meds all in the AM, because as I'm starting to feel better, it's harder and harder to remember my noon and PM doses, especially if I'm eating out or something.

Also, I've heard something along the lines of Lialda being indicated for inducing remission, but not for maintenance.  Does anyone know anything about this?
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg 10mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I also have NEVER been able to remember to take meds mid-day, no matter how bad I'm feeling.
So what you say makes good sense! I'm also interested to hear about the differences.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), trying Curamin.
Flaring, seasonal? or supplements too harsh? Back on prednisone, tried to taper but now back up to 20-30 after several really bad days. Waiting for insurance decison on Humira...soon...

Diagnosed with left-sided UC on Sept 08 Colazal 5x2day, Lialda 2 per day (so unusual to take just 2 pills)
Canasa 1 supp. every nigh Cortifoam 1 at night
Vitamins: Zinc, B complex, Fleexsead Oil capsules, Multi. Digestive Enzymes (helps a lot)

I wish I could switch to Lialda too. I hate taking pills 3x a day and I often miss the 3pm dose.

Diagnosed with proctitis in March 2007 - Treated with Canasa 2x Daily
Diagnosed with UC December 08 but had symptoms months ago - Treating with Asacol 400mg (9 a day)

sicklygirl, I'm pretty sure Lialda also has a patient assistance program. You should check it out!

I'm taking Apriso which is Colazol's version of Liada and it definitely works the same. THey gave me a discount coupon so it pays my entire $40 co-pay (so I pay $0) for a whole year. I was paying $10 for generic Colazol, and didn't want to pay $40 for dosing convenience, but for free, for a year is great! WIth Apriso you take 4 pills in the morning and that's it.
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis at 24 years old 1995/ Ulcerative Colitis in 1998.
In remission from 2005 - 3/2009.

Hospitalized for flare 3/2009.

Current Meds: Apriso 4/day, Prednisone 40mg per day, Rowasa Enemas 2/day, Culturelle

I've seen no difference (actually its worse but that's because I"M MUCH WORSE NOW than a year ago). But it really depends upon the case of course, in the end you really have to try yourself I guess.
UC since 2006

2009 UC Pancolitis though Primiarly Left Sided, Active Moderate

Current Meds: Lialda 4 tab a day
Predinsone (40 mg a day) since 3/30 Not doing anything, hopefully something soon!

Current Supplements:
Vit. B-12, Vit. D3, VSl#3 Probiotics, Calcium citrate

What does remission feel like, I don't remember!

Nip UC in the bud with diet before it nips you in the bud (or butt) for good!

Lialda was our Dr's first choice but the pills were too big for my 10 yr old to take. It's worth a try for you! good luck

I would love to switch but I don't think I can bother my GI again for a little while. I have called her office 5x this week. Maybe some day down the line when I am low on Asacol. I also don't want to risk going into a flare. I have a pretty good balance right now. smilewinkgrin

I switched from Asacol to Lialda about two years ago. The once a day thing is awesome.

Lialda is VERY expensive and I am always concerned about them not wanting to run the program anymore. It is a really nice touch. I called the Lialda program yesterday and one card last you 12 relfills which is really nice they used to only last 3 refills. I wish I didnt have to take anything, but the convenience is worth it. When I switched I had no changes. When I was hospitalized last year the hospital gave me Asacol. So I know my body is ok with switching back and forth.

Goodluck to you!!

I feel like Asacol hasn't done anything for me.  In fact, after I take my doses, I am usually in the bathroom.  I might ask my doctor to switch to Lialda after my script runs out.
