Hi all,
I'm in a flare and have been for 4 years, but now my butt is really burning as I've posted before. Yesterday was so much better, today a lot of pain. My doc said 10 mg of Pred for 10 days, this is very safe right?
Just help me that this is ok for me right now.
P.S. I went to buy my canasa which I always had script coverage it was $392 now that I don't hav coverage and I had to refuse it. That is terrible for us folk that really needed it.

I think it's safe. But maybe taper to 5mg for 5 days before stopping? I would ask your GI about that if you are uncomfortable. I just got off of pred. I only took it for 3 1/2 weeks b/c I couldn't handle the side effects. I was on the phone with my GI a lot for reassurance. I used to feel bad about calling but that's why they get paid the big bucks!

It is a shame how much the drugs we need cost.

What were your side effects, I'm scared now. I just took a pill with food. I hope I don't get stomach upset or get sick, I can't stand going to the bathroom anymore than I am!

10mg is a really, really low starting dose for treating UC. Most people start at 40 or 60mg. No dose of pred is safe long-term, but your dose is low and should be just fine short term. Sometimes it's worth the risk of taking pred to stop the UC symptoms. Don't worry too much about side effects...I feel that if you worry that you'll get them all it does it make it worse!

As for affording your prescription, here is information about the patient assistance program the manufacturer has. You might be able to get the Rx filled for free or very low cost.

Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg 10mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I agree and am not sure if you are going to see results with a low dose (10mg) of prednisone. Prednisone, at the right dose and for most people, works quickly at reducing symptoms. I understand your fear of the drug, I had that fear too. I guess it's time to talk with your doctor about the next step.

I tried the canasa help line, they said my income is too high, what a joke! Thank you recommending the site, its good to know there is help out there anyways. I have liquid Rowasa so I will start that, but I just started the Pred today, we'll see how I do. How fast does it start to work I wonder? I took it at 10am I went to the bathroom at 11:30 and it wasn't as painful, maybe I'm wishful thinking, but i feel better already. My bum burn has slowed down emensly!

Thanks again, I really appreciate it, what a bummer that I don't qualify.

I started at 40mg dose, but the first day I was on it I only took 20mg b/c it was late in the day by the time I got the Rx filled. Anyway, by the next day I noticed a dramatic drop in the number of BMs (less than half of what I had been having) and by the following day I only had 1 or 2 BMs.

i agree that 10mg is a low dose to start you on, like others i started at 40mg and even at that i had no side effects from it, i just became dependant and couldn't get off (its been over a year now and i am still trying to taper). I also read at 10mg you usually don't get the typical prednisone side effects so you should be ok, although not sure if it is a high enough dose to get you out of a flare. When i started my dose at 40mg, i felt better within 24 hours. Good luck and don't worry about contacting your doctor, like others have said that is what they are there for :)

How come people have a hard time tapering b/c they do so well on it? Why if at a lose dose say of 10 or 5mg can't that be a maintenance drug? I hope this helps me heal to the point of only a few bm's a day. Lately, with no blood, I'm going 5 times it's rough on my behind! I'm feeling good right now, no pain.

Thank you!

No dose of prednisone is safe long-term, even very low ones, due to the risk of opsteoporosis and other serious side effects. Prednisone isn't effective as a maintenance drug, anyway. It can get you out of a flare, but once the inflammation is healed, it doesn't keep it from coming back. Weird, huh? I think that people have trouble tapering because the inflammation comes back once they drop below a certain dose.

As to going 5x/day, I would have been GLAD beyond belief to only be going that many times when I was at the height of my flare...I was up in the 15-20 range at my worst.

Bless your heart Fruitgirl,

I'm really worried about driving with my friend tonight (male) I have pooped my pants so many times driving lately, that I'm a little freaked. I told him I poop a lot and carry toilet paper, but people don't "get it" but I won't concentrate on that, I will think positive. I'm thinking of wearing depends but the ones I bought are so big I can pull the waist band up over my head (not really, but almost). I don't want it to come to this.

We'll see how I feel around the time I leave.

Thanks for the kind words.

Blessings,

Linda

The anxiety I get from having an accident can get really bad at times.  It was to the point where every time I pulled out of my driveway, I would have to pull back in and run in to go to the bathroom.  I know it was all in my head but I couldn't make the anxiety stop.  I finally got a very low dose of Xanax that I take as needed.  I take a 1/2 of a .25 mg. pill so it's only .125 mgs.  I only need it a few times a week so I'm not worried of becoming addicted to it.  You may want to consult with a doctor about it.  It's cheap and it's my miracle drug.  We are going to Chicago (4 1/2 hour drive) and I'm not nervous at all because I know the Xanax will get me there. lol.  It's really helped to give me my life back!

Good luck with the Prednisone.  One tip I have for Pred, is to divide the dose over 2-4 times a day.  My first GI had me take it once a day and I did horrible on it, I finally realized that my body was freaking out when I got close to my next dose (my UC symptoms would get really bad) because it was out of my system.  I began splitting the pills in 1/2 and taking them throughout the day to keep it constant in my body.  You may want to try taking 5 mgs. at night and 5 mgs. in the morning.

everyone is different in regards to side effects.  10mg for  10 days you "should" see no side effects.

I have been on pred for a few months with side effects.  I have also been on lite doses of 5-15mg for 30 days with NO side effects.

You may not experience side effects at lower doses but prednisone should not be taken long term (more than 4 months). It should never be used or considered a a maintenance drug as even at low doses it can cause irreversible damage.

so I'm I decided to do 5mg in the am and 5mg at dinner, b/c I was so tired yesterday. It doesn't matter, taking the 5mg makes me tired too. I slept good last night, so I know it's the pred making me sleepy.

I didn't go to the bathroom anymore after I took the pred, my butt needed a rest. I think what's burning and my woman part is burning too, could be yeast. I don't have any itches or discharge though, I have Diflucan at home, maybe I'll take one and see if it helps. What do you think?

This probably won't matter at such a low dose, and someone can correat me if I'm wrong, but I understood that pred was best taken morning,10-11am,as it supresses and then mimicks the function of the adrenal glands,
you naturally get your main boost mid, morning a couplr of hours or so after you've woken up.
