Hello!

I was just diagnosed with UC this week.  My GI put me on Rowasa enema for 3 months.  This seems like a long time to me.  The Rowasa website said normal treatment is 3-6 weeks.  Has anyone else been on this medicine and for how long?  I have mild to moderate UC effecting my lower colon.

Also, my GI scheduled a checkup in 6 weeks and a sigmoidoscopy in 3 months.  Does this sound normal?

I think caffiene was the trigger for my UC.  I have a 6 month old son and I am also working, so I've been tired, and starting drinking a lot of coffee.  Once I cut this out, I felt much better!  Was caffiene a trigger for anyone else?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

Rowasa can be a maintenance medication meaning that it can be used indefinately. The typical dosing is 6-8 weeks, depending on your symptoms and/or your reaction to it. It's really up to you and the doctor on how long you need to stay on them.

Your doctor may just want to see if the meds are working by doing the sig. The longer you have it (Uc) and the better you do the less time you will get scoped. Before I hit my 10 year mark I would get a sig every year and now that I'm past 10 years I get a full scope every 2 years but no more sigs.

Caffeine is a natural bowel stimulant. Many Uc'ers can't handle caffeine.

A lot of people use Rowasa for maintenance. I've been seeing my GI more frequently than evern 6 weeks (I was just diagnosed in January), but I was really, really, really sick. My guess is that the caffeine makes your UC symptoms worse, but probably didn't trigger it.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg 10mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Caffeine is too much of a stimulant for me-- so I avoid it. You could try cutting back gradually to a cup of coffee daily to gauge the effect on your colon. What your doctor advises sounds reasonable to me. During past flares when I used Rowasa alone it took about 8 weeks of nightly use to get rid of all symptoms. Hang in there! Some extra time to rest would likely help-- so I hope you'll get more breaks. No question that it's hard with caring for a new baby. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I have been on Rowassa for 16 years now.  No issues. I use it as a maintenance drug.  It really does work. You will start to see real results after 2 weeks.  You may need other meds to help get you in remission but Rowassa is a good.

Caffeine.... I try to avoid it. Coffee, soda, ice tea.  I have noticed when taking a probiotic I am able to tolerate caffeine every other day.
Everyone is different. But Caffeine could make your symptons worse.
