Hi Guys, I have a few questions that I need help with, I think im fighting off a flare at the moment as i've been feeling a bit fluey over the last few weeks and my BM's have been looser although no blood and not D just looser. I am now sore down there but not in pain. I have upped my meds to 9 x colazide and 2 x asacol rectal meds per day to try and fight off the symptoms. I have developed a really sore mouth over the last couple of days and it feels like I have burnt the roof of my mouth and my tongue is sore, the roof of my mouth started to bleed slightly so I thought i'd have a look. I have lots of liitle red spots all over sides of mouth and inside of lips. This has happened before but not as severely. I visited my gp this morning who said there are loads of little ulcers in there and it could be a mouth infection or could be related to colitis. He has prescribed me Erthromycin (antibiotics) and asked me if I was ok to take antibiotics. I have not needed to take any since being diagnosed with UC so im not sure if I should take them or not? I have heard that antibiotics can make UC symptoms worse is this correct? If I am starting to flare then I don't want to make it worse by taking these tablets. What would you do? I don't want to make things worse but if it is only a mouth infection then I guess it needs treatment?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would ask my GI. I had mouth ulcers last week and my GI said not to worry and we continued treating my flare without change.
Female, 41
1996 diagnosed proctitis (during pregnancy, just months after I quit smoking)
Mar 3, 2009 diagnosed ulcerative colitis - it got my entire colon - severe

Fighting my first major flare up of UC (but I think my first UC flare up was at the end of 2006, 2 months after I quit smoking again)
60 mg prednisone (started at 30 but was doubled immediately) Mar 5/09
salofalk enemas = 5-aminosalicylic acid (mesalamine) added March 24/09 after second colonoscopy showed not enough progress ( previously managed proctitis with same stuff as suppository and then enema in 06)

Mouth ulcers usually precede a flare in my UC.   You should ask about taking Flagyl while on the Erythromycin.  My GI doctor only prescribes Cipro.  As a matter of fact, I attribute my over usuage of Erythromycin as contributing to my developing UC.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/ see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

I avoid antibiotics like the plague....I know that they triggered my first flare. As for the ulcers in your mouth (canker sores) they are a known manifestation of UC and I would suspect that yours are related to your possible flare. I have had them before even when I have not been flaring and always find they go away after a week or so.
