How low of a dose do you usually drop to before you quit taking it?  I'm at 10mg right now, and hope to drop to 5mg after I see my GI on Friday.  I was supposed to see him Tuesday, but he was called away for an emergency so my appointment was rescheduled.  Just curious how quickly I might be able to get off of it!  I still haven't had any symptoms creeping back in and I'm keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg 10mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Yay for doing better! I never had to go lower than 5, then off. And I would only do that for few days.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; use prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated all wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion).
Flaring, seasonal? Back on prednisone, tried to taper but now back up to 30 after several really bad days. Humira denied, waiting for approval to start Remicade.

Thanks, Peety! I hope my doc will just let me quit after I drop to 5. The munchies are getting out of control, and while I did need to gain a bit of weight back, I like the way I look right now and don't want to gain any more. It's he!! being on pred during a candy-infused holiday!

I hope you stay symptom free. Did you ever take Asacol and Canasa without the pred? I have been pretty much symptom free for a while with just Asacol and suppositories. I am on an antibiotic now and I am freaked out that it will set my gut into a flare.

My GI had me taper by 5mg/week until I got to 20, then I dropped by 2.5mg/week until I was done. It was torture, but I was able to get off of the pred without any issues, and that was more important to me than getting off of it fast. Being on pred was absolutely horrible, and I was willing to do whatever I needed to do to ensure I didn't have to go back up to a higher dose!

I completely understand your frustration. I gaine 50 pounds (yes, 50) in THREE months on pred-it was sickening. And that was just one of many awful side effects.

Good luck with the tapering!!

Yup, I started out on Asacol, added Rowasa a week later, and was pretty close to remission after being on the two for about a month and a half, then I picked up a tummy bug from my son, which threw me back into full flare again. My doc and I decided I'd been sick for long enough that I just needed to get well as fast as possible.

I hope your antibiotics don't cause you any problems. Are you taking a probiotic? That might help!

Sicklygirl-I agree about the probiotic! That might help. I also always take acidopholus when on antibiotics as well. I hope it goes well for you-I understand your nervousness about it! I try to avoid antibiotics at all costs!
