I've been on 40mg of pred for 2 weeks and I'm not seeing any improvement. I'm still bleeding a ton and the number of bowel movements has actually increased from about 15 to around 30-40 a day. I can't take any 5 asa's. I'm supposed to taper down to 30mg of pred on Tuesday. Shouldn't I be seeing some improvement at this point?? At least less blood?

You really need to call your doctor and tell him/her/NP or PA what is going on.  They will advise you.

I agree that you should call your doc. Prednisone typically works fast, so there should be some noticeable improvement within 2 weeks. He might get you to increase the dosage instead of tapering down. My first prednisone course started at 40mg, but I had to bump up the second one to 60mg.

Definitely call your doc. I noticed improvement the day after I started pred, and by the second day I was down to my normal 1-3 BMs/day. He may have you bump up to 60mg...I've heard that's what it takes sometimes.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg 10mg of Prednisone (quick taper), Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Thanks for the advise. I just called the doctor. I started the SCD yesterday and was wondering if anyone on the diet noticed a change in the amount of bleeding after starting the diet. I hoping it will help slow the bleeding down also. A formed stool seems a million miles away....

Are you on anything besides pred? It seems like you should be on some sort of a maintenance drug...perhaps 6MP or azathriopine. You'll need to be on something as you taper off the pred. What about rectal meds? Maybe a steroid suppository or enema would help you; the topical stuff often works faster and more effectively than oral.

I'm fairly certain that your GI will increase your dosage once you tell him that you are bleeding and going upwards of 40 times a day. You definitely shouldn't be tapering down to 30mg. I usually start as 60mg like other posters have mentioned. I feel for you, I've been in the 30-40 times a day boat before, and it's hell. Hang in there.
