How long does the bleeding last??? I just got out of the hospital....I was admitted for 3 days. The pain is gone. The diarrhea is only a few maybe 3-4 times a day. But I'm still bleeding. Mostly in the morning and sometimes in the evening. Usually when I'm nearing another dose of pred. Right now I'm only on pred it's all I take take. After being on the Iv pred they bumped me up to 60 mg to go home from the hospital. Tomorrow I'm supposed to taper back down to 40 mg. I'm just wondering at what point does the bleeding stop?????? It's slowed down but man It's just so scary to see blood every time I use the bathroom.

Posted 4/15/2009 5:23 PM (GMT -6)'ll take time, and while it's scary, it's part of having UC when flaring if the lining is at that point of fragility.

It won't heal quickly, but since your symptoms have reduced, that's a good thing.

here in the colon is your or throughout?

You may have symptoms while tapering...

You have a ways to go methinks.

Did the docs give you any other meds such as rectal?

When's your next appt with your GI?

I've bled for as long as 2 years, it just depends on what meds you can find that work for you. If you notice that you're starting to bleed when you get close to when your Pred dose is due, try splitting up the dose. I went so far as to take Pred 4x a day instead of once or twice a day just to keep it constant in my body. It worked for me even though my doctor thought I was nuts.

I would question your GI and ask why you aren't trying something along with the Pred, what's the game plan for when you're off of it? Usually people need other meds to keep them in remission like the ASA meds or immunosuppressants.

Hope you are feeling better today.

You have not written as to whether you have been diagnosed for UC or Crohns. In any case at times the blood loss is very less, hardly a drop or two. But as it falls in the toilet, it changes the colour of the entire water lying there and one feels that one has bled a lot. I am sure you will feel better. Please consult your doc about tapering dosage. He may recommend that you taper by 5 of 10 mg per week instead of 20 mg.

Has he not prescribed any other medicine alongwith Pred. Normally all doctors do advice ASA meds or immunosuppressants.

Take care and keep us posted.

For me, bleeding is the second to last thing to go. The first being the left sided pain. But I have bled off and on for the past 17 years. Not that it was normal because ideally you want all the bleeding to stop. But a little bleeding is not that big of a concern unless it's very long term which can result in anemia over time. It sounds like you are doing better but not quite where you should be. I agree with Q, have you given rectal meds a try? Most times the bleeding you see is near the rectum and it can be easily remedied with the use of rectal meds (most times).

I see blood at some time during the day, every day, always have. Even when I'm feeling good.
My body makes more. It's only when I'm flaring that I sometimes get anemic.

Hopefully it will stop -- I'm hopeful now with the Remicade -- but maybe it won't.

I've been bleeding on and off since February, it makes me mad, seems like I can be so close to complete remission but can never quite get there. Sometimes it makes the water reddish sometimes there is nothing on the TP at all, this much change from one day to the next.
