There are so many different kinds of probiotics, and you probably need to try a few to find what works for you. I am on VSL#3 at the moment, and I think it's working fine. However, it's expensive, so if something cheaper works well for you, then that might be better. I think a number of people on the forum use culturelle.

Natren and Custom Probiotics are brands that have worked very well for me. Both companies offer products with multiple strains in one product and proven very high potency.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.

Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Check for the type of bacteria (should be something like lactobacillus and bifidobacterium) and if it needs to be kept in the fridge, or if the pill reaches the intestines before being broken down (if not you might just swallow the bacteria and it gets killed by stomach acidity, that is why probiotic yogurts have the reputation to only be slighlty effective.)
That is what I have read recently, I am new to this too :)
Diagnosed with pancolitis 03/09
Prednisone 40 mg, Mezavant 4.6g
Mulitivitamin, calcium supplements, probiotics
Seroquel 12.5mg and Paxil 10 mg for anxiety (since 2003)

They gave me Flora Q in the hospital last year.  After I was discharged, I went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist told me they sell it over the counter...but it was way too expensive.  My nutritionist suggested Powerdophilus by Country Life.  I purchase it online.  My GI doctor said it was fine.  I take two per day with food.  One with breakfast and one with dinner and keep them refrigerated.  Good luck!
62 yr old granny. South Jersey
Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008
Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.
