Now that was fun since I had to go to one lab for CBC, etc. and another for the prometheus.  My insurance will only cover part - expensive testing.  I think the doctor is having me tested for celiac, etc. etc.  I have been on 6 MP for 7 weeks - last 8 days went up to 75mg. and now he finally wants this test.  I am not sure what is going on but he said it was important!
I have been having some short-lived pain around my sternum area - gas, etc. and I believe it is the increase in 6 MP.  Doctor wants me to have my heart checked out.  Geez!  Gas-X helps and only three episodes is not enough to worry me yet!
I will get results in a week or so - then decide unless, of course, pain gets worse.  UC is going great - not gone - but so much better.

I hope you get good results Elaine.

You should definitely get your heart checked out. You are better safe than sorry!

Hi Elaine,

Prometheus Labs in a lab in California that dose specialized testing. They have many different tests. When I was on Remicade a sample of my blood was sent to them to test for antibodies. Since you are on 6-MP you are probably being tested to see how well it is metabolized. Depending on the test results you doctor may keep you on your current dosage, increase it, or take you off it all together.

Good luck with your tests.

I don't know what you're doctor is trying to accomplish with the Prometheus test at this stage. If it's to see if you have the proper enzymes then it's sort of late for that I would think and if he's after the metabolites then I would say it's too early. Did you ever ask your doc why he's doing the Prometheus test at this stage?

Red - he ordered the test for exactly the reasons that Paul L. above said.

Because I can't take the mesalamines, etc. he wants to find out if he can safely increase the doseage and get me off the prednisone.  He is very concerned about that!  I have been on prednisone since Feb. 1 and not been able to go below 25 mg. without bleeding and other symptoms of UC returning.  Also, he is checking for celiac, lactose, etc. I believe.  The test stated that.

Elaine....you are having the exact same symptoms as I!!!  I do have a cardiologist whom I see only once a year.  I had a stress test two years ago and passed with flying colors.  He wants me to have another one this year but no hurry for it.  I believe it is referred to as an Echo stress test.  They have you walk on a treadmill and then increase the speed and leverage, you quickly have to jump onto the table and they perform the ECHO.
My GI doctor didn't have me take that Prometheus test until I was on the 6MP for awhile too.  That was quite a few years ago.  They also told me that my insurance should pay for it and I had to shell out over $250!!!
Getting back to the symptoms I was referrring to.  It seems like when I go for walks, I start to have upper gastric distress.  At first I thought it was my heart...I really did.  When I stopped to rest the feeling went away.  Is this what you have?  I have Prilosec here at home and was wondering if I should take it.  I believe if it were my heart I would be short of breath or something.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/08...now see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

Christine - I told the NP I thought it was from GERD.  I already take Prilosec every day for years for that.  But - one symptom listed on 6 MP is pancreatitis.  Now that is serious and I don't have that but could be my body is not processing fats too well.  Started yesterday cutting some more fat from my diet.  The prednisone is giving me such an appetite that I am sure I was eating so wrong.  No episodes since.  Reason I don't believe it is heart related is that it comes on just sitting and goes away after heat or relaxing - I can feel it "moving" around some like gas.  Just really came on since raising the 6MP to 75 mg.  I will wait to see what all the test results are and the doctor's decisions!

I will certainly have the heart checked out but one thing at a time - I have a hard time handling more unless I HAVE to!

Elaine, just remember that heart problems don't always come with a lot of symptoms. My husband has never had a bit of discomfort, sortness of breath, decreased energy or any of the other markers for heart problems. Yet a year ago when our PCP did a stress test (part of her routine because he has type II diabetes), it showed an irregularity. He ended up having an angioplasty, and the cardiologist told me his right coronary artery was 98% occluded. He was a heart attack waiting to happen and had never had any symptoms.

Judith and all - I am well aware of ALL heart problems - my husband had a heart attack at age 48, bypass surgery, aneurysm repair, etc. etc.  I will be on top of it if necessary and keep watching for any symptoms.  I think I know them all by now!  Just wanted you to know I will not be ignoring them.  I just have a hard time handling more than one thing at a time unless I have to.  My husband is battling lung cancer now too.  By the way, I do not get short of breath more than usual.  Remember I am obese so that comes pretty easy and I have seriously bad knees. I will follow up with the heart after I find out next treatment for this UC.

Thanks for your concern.
