Okay, I know I am having a flare, but this is crazy.  I woke at 4:00 a.m. w/ diarrhea.  I have since had probably 20 bm's most with tinges of blood, but now I can hardly stand up straight and am passing nothing but mucus and blood.  I started Colazol three days ago and have another colonoscopy next week.  I really don't want to go to the ER, but this has to stop at some point.  I am trying to push fluids and of course haven't had a bite to eat.  Any suggestions for really acute attacks like this?  Thanks.

I think you should wait to call the GI on monday and hopefully he will prescribe you some rectal meds.

You must eat something...low residue with some protein, because if you're only consuming fluids, that can increase your bms a bit.

What are you drinking, by the way?

Are you expecting your period as well?

Thanks for the input. I have decided to tough out the weekend and call on Monday. Actually feeling somewhat better today. Still passing tons of blood and mucus, but the pain is less. Any idea how long it takes Colazal to do any good?

It is always possible Colazal could be making your symptoms worse especially if Asacol didn't work for you, it is basically the same 5-ASA drug, but delivery method is different. Maybe cut back on your dosage a bit and see if it helps.

Please make sure to drink enough water to avoid dehydration. Do you have chicken broth? Drink it like water so that you get some protein from it. Eat a banana to replenish the potassium lost.
I have experienced the same thing on 2 weekends in a row last year. I ended up in ER for dehydration and was put on IV.
I wish you will feel better soon.

Don't let this go too far, as dehydration is a real concern. Try to choke down baby food, an Ensure and lots of Gatorade. The Colazal works best on Left sided UC, I am told, and it doesn't take long to kick in(unlike the 6mp which can take months). If you go to the ER, they will probably give you a steroid and saline, and take blood and urine tests. They will get your vitals stable and admit you. The steroid enema might help if you have some handy!
Hang tough,
