Hello, I've heard that artificial sweeteners are something you should avoid when you have UC. I have protein supplement and I've just found that there is lot of aspartame in it, so I don't know if I should stop drinking it. I've tried to google UC and aspartame, but did not find any clear answer.

Artificial sweetners screwed with my stomach long before I had UC, so I avoided them anyway. I think they taste like crap, too, so I didn't really mind that I can't drink diet soda!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, 40mg 30mg 20mg 15mg 10mg 10mg of Prednisone every other day, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I have a magazine that happens to break down the different artificial sweetners along with the pros and cons according to research...for aspertame it says this....

"Aspertame (NutraSweet, Equal) found in low-cal products and sugar free candy and gum, it's made of a combination of amino acids, it's considered probably safe (how reassuring eh LOL) Aspertame has never been proven to increase the risk of cancer, but rare cases of seizures, headahces, dizziness and a worsening of depression have been cited in those who ingest large amounts (more than 20 can of diet soda a day).

If you're curious about what is said about Sucralos (splenda), Sugar alcohols, Acesulfame potassium (also found in diet soft drinks, low-cal frozen desserts and cookies as well as sugar free gum and candy) or Saccharin (sweet'NLow) just let me know.

and I totally agree with Dr-A.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

My partner is a scientist in public health.

He will not touch aspartame. Won't even chew gum that has it. Convinced me to give up my diet coke habit as well!

Another interesting fact, he and his scientist buddies all take vitamin D supplements (at least 2000 IU per day) but nothing else. He does recommend I take calcium as well.

I find it interesting to know what the scientists are doing.

You'll have a difficult time finding a protein mix without some sort of sweetener..."zero" calories is all the rage and society will pay bigtime for that I suspect.

Knowing all the names that they go by is a good thing for one to do.

Yes, it could cause you more discomfort. I don't know if it would cause your UC to become worse, however...but I think you'd be best to avoid it.

I don't do protein drinks, but I have a major hate-on for the gum companies who have deleted sugar and replaced it with at least 5 artificial sweeteners instead.

I've chosen to chew Spry which has xylitol....but I still limit my pieces per day. Ugh..

Thanks for answers, in fact I've been avoiding artificial stuff in food and drinks for few years now, because of my headaches, but I've always been drinking these protein mixes and just yesterday I've found that it has so much aspartame in it! Funny where the danger can hide.. I'll buy some that is without any taste, just pure protein.

I try to avoid any artificial sweeteners that I can, and it isn't hard because I too think they taste like garbage. I choose to stick with real sugar, just watch the intake. Although I am quite annoyed that they use artificial sweeteners in regular gum now...

I have used Sweet and Low since as long as I can remember, much prior to developing UC.  It has never had any harmful effect on me.  Of course, I only use one packet in my one cup of coffee.  I also drink one diet coke or pepsi at lunch maybe three times a week.  Again, no harm.
