I am concerned about the excessive use of steroid creams and lidocaine for external soreness. What remedies have any of you tried for external soreness due to too many bm's, etc?

Do you mean soreness on the anal area? From excess wiping and/or excess D, some people use witch hazel or medicated tux pads...I personally like to use extra virgine olive oil, sounds crazy but it not only brings some relief it helps heal too and I actually use it on a daily basis as a body moisturizer.

"Do you mean soreness on the anal area?" Yes.
I like the idea of olive oil. Probably no side effects either!

You should see how quickly it clears up bruises, I bruise easily, always have and instead of them lingering for weeks when I rub a little extra virgin olivve oil onto them it fades them within a few days. I have crohn's (crohn's colitis which is CD affecting my colon) and with my crohn's I've gotten fissures on occassion and the EVOO not only soothes the area but helps heal it, that's been my experiance with it. Definitely no side effects, I use it as a body moisturizer because it really soothes and softens the skin and it absorbs fairly quickly too in my opinion.

I can't wait to try this!

I have a big nasty bruise on my arm from where my IV went through the vein and ended up depositing all my meds into my flesh. It is nasty and sore. This happened on Thursday during my last colonoscopy.

I have also been looking for a little relief elsewhere and such a simple solution is very appealing.

Thanks for the great question and idea!

It can calm the stomach and help the intestinal tract as well..here's a link about the benefits of EVOO...

http://herbscancure.com/blog/health-benefits-of-olive-oil/#

I've mentioned EVOO here at HW quite a few times, guess it's good to bring it up every once in a while, some people at the CD forum loved the idea when I mentioned over there too and are now avid users of it on a daily basis internally and externally.  about once a week I massage it through my hair and scalp (on dry not wet) and let it saturate for a few hours then wash and it helps keep my hair very healthy and shiney.

One can also try zinc ointment....

I agree that too much use of steroid topical creams can be a problem. It can also encourage a yeast infection (in that case one could try using vinegar in water splashed on the anus and rinsed and then an application of Canesten cream). Afterward use of zinc or evoo as pb4 suggests might be the ticket.

Use a small amount...I would think it could penetrate underclothing.

It actually absorbs pretty good, I've never had it stay behind on me undies that I noticed at least, but a small amount is sufficient anyway so long as you're sure to gently cover the entire area that needs it.
