Hello everyone. My name is Alaina and this is my first time on here. I have a question, and I'm hoping someone might have some sort of answer possibly.  Both my husband and I have UC.  He was just diagnosed about 2 years ago and has not been well ever since. As a last resort before removing his colon, they decided to try him on Humira.  He just started treatment about 3 weeks ago, had 4 injections the first time and just had another injection on the 15th.  My question is:

As his spouse, can I have an allergic reaction to Humira if we have sex?

I know this may sound a bit odd; however, about 3 weeks ago, right after his 4 injections, my body started "wigging" out. I have had hives like nobodies business.  They are terrible!!!! I had to go to the ER 3 times already, and they just seem to be getting worse.  I see an immunologist tomorrow because my thryoid levels are all distraught, but I was just wondering if any one else has had a problem like this....

I'm on a ton of medication for these hives, but they are still getting worse..please help! Thank you!!

Hi Christianbcmom, and welcome to HealingWell. I'm not sure I can answer your question, but my late husband and I both had UC and were on Remicade together and I never had a reaction after sex. What meds are you on for UC? Could it be one of the meds you are on? I think you need to call your doc and tell him how uncomfortable you are and pose this same question to him. I know you've been to the ER, but maybe your regular doctor should be contacted too. I'm sorry you are well right now; please keep us updated on how you and your husband are doing. How is he doing with the Humira? Again, welcome to HW!

Thank you Carol. I have contacted my primary physician, our GI doctor, and I see an immunologist tomorrow about what's going on with my body. My hives are actually becoming welts and leaving bruises on my body. It's awful, but I'm trying to stay positive. I know there are people who go through a lot worse.  Thank you for your kind words though, I greatly appreciate it.  Hopefully someone will have an answer soon. My nerves are on their last thread. Thank you though, and God Bless. I will keep everyone informed.

Oh...here is a list of my current medications ..

Levothyroxine (.88 mg)
Prednisone (35 mg) (It was 80 mg, but I'm on a tapering dose)
Zyrtec
Pepcid
Atarax
Singulair (But it makes me feel funny, so I haven't been taking it :()

I have also tried Claritin, Tagament, and Benadryl but have found no relief yet.

I know this has autoimmune written all over it, but I wasn't sure if Humira could have this effect on a spouse either. I'm trying to consider everything that would make my body just go wacko!

I'm sorry Alaina, that sounds positively awful. I hope you get some relief soon....and go ahead and give yourself a break; both of you having UC and all the lovely stuff that goes along with it isn't easy. Take care.

Here's a case of penicilin allergy being activated by sex with someone taking penicilin.
