Why are mornings the worst for us? Is it because our colons are waking up with us?

I'm supposed to be in remission, but I don't understand why I still have morning runs within two hours I wake up. Sometimes it's just gas, and sometimes the stools are loose. I'm so annoyed! Is there anything I can do to get back to "normal" or do I just have to live with this?

I don't know what the official answer is, but in my mind it is what you say, that the colon is "waking up". Moving around and having something to eat after a night-long break gets everything going again in the morning.

I am in what I consider to be remission and have usually only 1 bm a day now and it is always within a couple hours of waking up. Usually after my morning cup of coffee!

Mornings are the worst for the majority, there are some that have their major issues in the afternoon or evening or late night only but it seems the majority are affected more severely in the am...seems to be the nature of the beast.

I've been told its because our colons are "waking up". When you're asleep, your whole body is. So just as it takes time for you to wake up, it takes your colon some time too.
I used to be a lot like this when I was a kid. I could never eat breakfast because it made me sooo sick and once I was diagnosed it got even worse. Now I have no problem...

My colon wakes me up every morning at 4 am and keeps me up until 6 or 7, when I take my dose of pred. I take my pred and go back to sleep around 7.. then wake up again a couple of hours later to go to work.

Mornings are hell.. I agree.

I'm seriously rolling with laughter, you all make me smile! Mornings are terrible, mostly gas, but definitely terrible!!!! I have to agree with some of the others, its not you waking up your colon; rather it's your colon waking you up!!! Totally blows. I'm doing well right now with my UC as I'm prednisone for other reasons, but my poor husband has this problem and he's on Humira. Wish I knew what else to say...

I'm officially in remission but yet I still have the morning dashes to the bathroom. I still go from 1-3 times a day and very rarely do I have solid bms. I asked my GI about this and he said that some Uc'ers will always have D even while in remission.

My bathroom trips have been normal for a while. I go within a hour of when I get up. I go in the morning and depending on the amount of fiber or food I consume in a day I might go a second time later in the afternoon, but no diarrhea for me thank goodness.
Diagnosed with left sided UC in sigmoid colon and rectum 1986.
Put on Azulfidine 2 X 3 a day and Rowasa enemas 60mg.
Have been pretty much in remission overall other than a few flares over the past 21 years.
Medicine changed to Asacol 400mg 2 pills X3 times a day. Taken off all meds in 2004.
Diagnosed with acid reflux 2005. Put on Protonix 40mg.
Have been using Canasa 1000mg suppositories nightly since January 2007.
Was put back on Asacol 400mg 2 pills 2X a day in July 2007 maintenance.

Yes, and believe it or not, now that I am not flaring, constipation is more of a problem, so I am very happy to even have that one daily bm.  When I miss it for even a day, I get very anxious!
