I was just wondering if people who took azathioprine tended to get sick more often since it is an immunosuppresent. With working at a medical facility and have too young kids I would getting sick too often.

Diagnosed w/crohns in October 07
Taken off all meds January 08 because of pregnacy
Back to gastro Dr. January 09 (new dr.)
Diagnosed w/ UC instead; told should have never gotten off meds
4/23 Colonoscopy showing severe ulcerative proctitis
taking Asacol (6 pills x 2/day) and proctofoam maybe switching to azathioprine
Flaring still as of 04/09

Indeed, as azathioprine is an immunosuppressive drug one's susceptibility to microbial infections will generally increase.

You would think, but not necessarily. Been on aza for awhile now. Can't count the number of times I have been examing a kid and they have sneezed right in my face, lol. I have had a cold this spring thanks to my day care baby, but it usually lasts 3 days or so and my body gets rid of it.

I also was almost never sick while on Azathioprine. My theory is that my immune system is so ramped up even immunosuppressants can't get it all the way back to normal.

I'm glad to hear that most of you didn't get sick often. I'm so paranoid about taking this drug.
31 yr old female currently breastfeeding (weaning so I can start 6mp)
Mild Pancolitis
I've had UC since 2000 but was in remission for most of those 8 years med free

I just got off it a month or so ago because my body couldn't tolerate it.  I was on it over winter so I thought I was doomed to get some nasty cold and I didn't end up with even a small cold.  I agree with the others, I think your body is so ramped up with everything else, it won't allow a cold to get in.

Diagnosed January 07 - but realize I've been living with minor flare-ups for 10+ years.

Asacol 3 pills/3 times a day.

I cant remember the last time I ever had a cold, and now that I have been on immunosuppressants (6mp) my WBC is still well above normal ~14.5-16.0. Everyones system reacts differently. If you were one to get sick before, the likely hood is the frequency may increase.

Dx'd June 08 severe UC (pancolitis), symptoms for years before dx
30 yrs old
Meds
Asacol 400mg x 12, Prednisone 40mg tapering off now
6-mp 100mg, Canasa
Probiotics x3/day, Ominvite Multivitamin x3/day

I have been on 50 mg Imuran since November 2008 and I work at a junior college where I touch many computers every day and am in classrooms with lots of students. I also take Remicade every seven weeks.

I have not caught anything from anyone and feel great.

I do get flu shots each year and had a pneumonia shot in November when I was on high dose of Prednisone.

The drug itself made me sicker than I ever remember being in my LIFE. The first week wasn't too bad, slight nausea. Then the second week, when I increased the dosage I felt sick most of the day, each day getting a little worse. It eased up by the afternoon. I posted about it here and several people recommended taking the med at night and hopefully sleeping through the sick feelings. Well, that was night I certainly don't want to relive, and the last time I took Imuran
