My husband has had pancolitis for two years and has not gone into remission yet.

He has a new doctor that is prescribing him Imuran for 30 days in addition to the Humira he has been on for a year. He has also been taking 4 Asacols a day for a week now. The Asacol seems to have reduced his trips to the bathroom, so I was wondering if it would be better to increase the Asacol instead of starting another immune suppressant. I am worried that he will be on two immune suppressants. That might open up a whole new can of worms. His doctor claims, "he needs to get this monster under control." Has anyone been on two immune suppressants simultaneously?

Any comments/advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Concerned Wife

Well, I have been on prednisone along with 6MP several times.  They both suppress the immune system.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/ see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

I was on Remicade and 6MPs. Not a good result. My white blood cells fell so fast the doc called me once he got my labs back. They seem to have made me intolerant to both- the Dr took me off both and we had to start from square one with Lialda. But, it looks like other people have been able to maintain on 2 immune suppressants. But watch the white blood cells.

Good luck to you and your husband. You seem to be a great advocate!

I am on Humira, and I was on Imuran for a year and a half with the Humira. For me it wasn't that big of a deal. It is an immune suppressant, but I didn't feel the effects of it. I work with preschoolers, and didn't catch their illnesses, but I was extra cautious when I did get sick. While on the Imuran since it was a daily pill, I added some extra vitamins because of the immune suppressant. Just a suggestion.
