I've been battling this flare up since the end of March. I had a remicade infusion on the 17th, and I'm still struggling. I called my dr to get his thoughts, thinking he'd probably want to put me on prednisone or something. Nope. He wants me to go in for a colonoscopy this week to see what is going on in there. He is thinking that there might be something viral going on, and he wants to take some biopsies to check it out. If they come back positive, he can properly treat me for the infection. If they come back negative, we can discuss different medication options for my UC.
Once I hung up the phone with him, I just started to cry. My last colonoscopy was so painful. And because I was so dehydrated, my blood pressure would drop when they tried to sedate me more. I'm hoping my blood pressure is nice and strong this time around so the can knock me out. I just don't want to go through this procedure again. This will be my third in the last two years - and I know some of you have gone through way more than that, but I still can't help feeling upset about it.
Now I'm just waiting on a phone call from the GI office to schedule the procedure. Fun times.
Diagnosed w/IBS: Oct. 2006
Diagnosed w/UC: Jan. 2007 (proctitis), July 2008 (pancolitis)
Medications: Canasa (helped the first flare when it was just proctitis); Rowasa enemas (did not help as the following colonoscopy confirmed pancolitis); Lialda (2 pills in the morning, 2 pills in the evening, soon to be 2 pills in the morning only once I'm off steriods); Prednisone; Protonix (only took while on prednisone); Remicade infusions, started at 5mg/kg (Aug 2008), increased to 7.5mg/kg (March 2009), increased to 10mg/kg and increased to every 6 weeks (April 2009) - 7 infusions so far, next infusion on 5/28 continuing every 6 weeks; Zyrtec-D (for allergies); Toprol (a generic form, 25 mg, for a rapid heart rate)
Supplements: Women's One-a-day multi-vitamin; Super B-complex w/vitamin C, Iron supplements, Omega-3 Fish Oil (coated, not sure how much except one soft-gel daily), Aloe Vera supplement (two daily), Acidopholis, Probiotic Align
Diet: Spinach and Sunflower seed butter diet (starting 3/21/09) (will try again once I can eat normally again)
Current Status: April, 2009 - suffering another flare-up :(

Seriously, ask for a stool sample test.

I am sorry to hear about all of your troubles. On the positive side, maybe it is something bacterial/viral and you can wipe it out and feel better?

I have to go for one in a few weeks too. It will be my first. I am as worried about the night before the colonoscopy as I am about the colonoscopy itself. I always thought *maybe* my situation wasn't UC because I never had a full colonoscopy but the other day I was at the GI's office and I saw my pathology report from a few years ago when I had a sigmoidoscopy and it said right on the report, Ulcerative Colitis. I was in shock. I don't know why my first GI didn't tell me this in the first place. All this time I thought maybe I have C.diff or a bug...

Diagnosed with proctitis in March 2007 - Treated with Canasa 2x Daily
December 08 - Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9 a day)

If you're worried about being dehydrated again this time, could you maybe go in an hour or two early so they can run and IV and get you hydrated? That way you can at least be sedated!
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).
