1. How long do you flares last?
2. How many flares do you get a year?
3. When in remission, do you follow a special diet?

My flares generally last about two months, but last year (my worse flare since being diagnosed in 1998) lasted seven months.
I usually get one flare a year but since my flare lasted seven months last year I am hoping to skip this
I am now in remission, since Nov 1st, and no, I follow no specific diet.  I eat anything I like but I do stay away from crabcakes (I suffered two flares after eating them in the past) and anything too spicy.
62 yr old granny. South Jersey
Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 1998 in hospital
Hospitalized (2nd time) in May 2008
Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/ see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.

I've only had one flare and it lasted a year and a half. During that time I tried every drug in the book.
I haven't had any flares since. I've been in remission about 3 years. I don't follow a special diet. Like any other normal person has certain foods that bother them, I do too. In addition I'm lactose intolerant so I try to keep my dairy consumption low.
20 year old college student diagnosed in March 2005
Remission since January/April 2006->THREE YEARS!!!!!
Trying Colazal 3 750mg x2 (NOT for a full blown flare, just some random symptoms)
25mg Elavil
75mg Effexor XR for GAD
Will possibly go back to asacol

1. How long do you flares last?
Flares have lasted from anywhere from a couple weeks to a year for me.

2. How many flares do you get a year?
I've gone years being in remission.

3. When in remission, do you follow a special diet?
Since diagnosis I have made an effort to make sure I take my vitamins, probiotics and fish oil. I recently have avoided dairy as much as possible. I want to start following an anti-inflammatory diet.

When I am having problems, I eat very bland foods like white toast, crackers, chicken noodle soup and yogurt. Take care of yourself and good luck.

I too would love to hear answers for this
Ulcerative proctitis. On Asacol 3 3x a day, and Meslamine enemas nightly.
Now on Hydrocortisone suppositories for 2 weeks.
Urgency is still my biggest problem.  rarely have D, but extreme gas and urgency at any given time.

My flares seem to run a course...prednisone helps mask them, but tapering off brings back the symptoms....Mine have lasted a year.... I havent yet tried 6MP, Immuran or Remicade - heading that direction.
Stats:35 yr old male. UC for 15 years.
location:North Western PA

Surgeries: Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (and I am still more afraid of my UC!!)
