How many of you had lots of ear infections/strep throat as a kid. I had three to four cases of strep throat a year and usually at least one ear infections. These were all treated with anti-biotics. Just curious if anyone else experienced these types of infections frequently when they were growing up.

I had strep throat at least once/yr. Always treated w/antibiotics. I think that is one of the big reasons why I'm here.
31 yr old female currently breastfeeding (weaning so I can start 6mp)
Mild Pancolitis
I've had UC since 2000 but was in remission for most of those 8 years med free
Cannot tolerate mesalamine - starting 6mp soon

I had lots of ear infections as a kid and was always on antibiotics. The stupid dr had me on amoxacilin (sp?) for 6 months straight at one time. Killed my immune system. I'm willing to bet that's why I have UC today.
Diagnosed w/IBS: Oct. 2006
Diagnosed w/UC: Jan. 2007 (proctitis), July 2008 (pancolitis)
Medications: Canasa (helped the first flare when it was just proctitis); Rowasa enemas (did not help as the following colonoscopy confirmed pancolitis); Lialda (2 pills in the morning, 2 pills in the evening, soon to be 2 pills in the morning only once I'm off steriods); Prednisone; Protonix (only took while on prednisone); Remicade infusions, started at 5mg/kg (Aug 2008), increased to 7.5mg/kg (March 2009), increased to 10mg/kg and increased to every 6 weeks (April 2009) - 7 infusions so far, next infusion on 5/28 continuing every 6 weeks; Zyrtec-D (for allergies); Toprol (a generic form, 25 mg, for a rapid heart rate)
Supplements: Women's One-a-day multi-vitamin; Super B-complex w/vitamin C, Iron supplements, Omega-3 Fish Oil (coated, not sure how much except one soft-gel daily), Aloe Vera supplement (two daily), Acidopholis, Probiotic Align
Diet: Spinach and Sunflower seed butter diet (starting 3/21/09) (will try again once I can eat normally again)
Current Status: April, 2009 - suffering another flare-up :(

I had a lot of strep, but after having my tonsils out at 5, I didn't have it ever again. My parents didn't want me to be on antibiotics all of the time, so that's why they made the decision to have them removed.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

I had ear infections and strep throat constantly in childhood. I had ear infections from age 6 months all the way up til 10 or 11. Strep throat started about 5 and I quit getting it as much when I was a teenager. I am reading others comments and i find it very interesting that other people have had teh same thing. I wonder if antibiotic use started this in my body.

I had strep throat constantly as a child! I was very sick 2 to 4 times a year. I had my tonsils removed when I was 17 and had a ton of problems with that too. I had to get recaudalized! AWEFUL!! I think we all have similar immune systems and that is why we were all sick often as children. Even as an adult my fiance willl get sick and I will get whatever he has and I get five times sicker and it takes me much longer to recover.

I'm a super positive person but I do remember times in my life as a child when I would just pray to feel normal (healthy), if only for a little while, when I would be sick for long periods of time. I seem to be doing that again these days with this frustrating disease we all share. I think it all relates.
Keep battling with positivity! Live your life!!

for posting a thread like this, and for thinking and trying to make connections...
I had strep throat CONSTANTLY growing up.  I had some MEAN sore throats with occasionally what I believe to be ulcerations.
Out of curiosity - and I don't mean to push things to far, but were you aware of a link between immunology and obsessive compulsive disorder?  There is even a hypothesized condition where children get OCD symptoms after getting strep throat.  I ask, because I went through a very strange period of what I would call OCD symptomatology (pretty specific stuff - not just 'anxiety') before/ and during my initial acute phase/diagnosis with Ulcerative Colitis.
Very interesting.  BTW i also had a flooring case of mono when i was about 21, or about 5 years before diagnosis with Ulcerative Colitis.  I even seem to remember strange stools when I had that.  Maybe I should mention that to a doctor some time.
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis 6/2006 at age 26 after sudden E.R. visit
~Pancolitis (Mild to Moderate)
 ~I had Mono in 2000
On Colazal 3x3/day; Folic Acid 1mg; Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc combo
(Generic Balsalazide not as effective for me)
In remission about 2-3 months after E.R. but not back to normal!
I hate Ulcerative Colitis and can't wait till we eradicate it

I had strep so often as a kid. I was a 'carrier' of it and I guess carriers aren't supposed to suffer from strep but guess what? I did! Go figure lol. I really should have had my tonsils out. I probably had 3-4 cases a winter and was constantly in the dr office. I still occasionally get strep. Had it last year a week after having my wisdom teeth out. That was fun.

I had chronic ear infections as an infant but by the time I was in kindergarten I think they stopped. My dad told the dr to give me a shot of penicillin and the dr was reluctant but after he did I stopped having the ear infections.

I do have a slight case of OCD but it didn't really come on until my senior year of high school/freshman year of college. I tended to push myself too far academically in high school and it brought a lot of anxiety on. I didn't confront it all until last fall after a justified meltdown while taking organic chemistry. I was initially treated for generalized anxiety disorder but after talking about other issues I was told I have some slight OCD. GAD runs in my family though so I probably had a predisposition to it...

I also had a HORRIBLE case of mono. It was reallllly bad. I was a junior in high school (2006) and in french class one day and completely blanked out and the teacher came up to me and asked what was wrong and it took a second for me to snap out of it and from then on it was all down hill. I ended up being mondo dehydrated and spent a week in the hospital sicker than a dog. I missed 27.75 days of school. The state education department didn't like that much...

The more I learn about biology/bacteria/viruses through my education the more upset I get with pediatricians and doctors. So many are ignorant and treat viral infections with antibiotics. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections only!!! A lot of that happened with me growing up.
20 year old college student diagnosed in March 2005
Remission since January/April 2006->THREE YEARS!!!!!
Trying Colazal 3 750mg x2 (NOT for a full blown flare, just some random symptoms)
25mg Elavil
75mg Effexor XR for GAD
Will possibly go back to asacol

I had only one ear infection when I was around 6....and I can still remember the pain!

I probably had quite a few strep infections considering the pain of my throat when sick, but I didn't really have lots of antibiotics when I was a kid.

I did have a bout if tonsilitis as a teen, and was on quite a bit of antibiotics that summer. I do wish I had my tonsils out at that time.
I had maybe one or two bouts of tonsilitis after that...again...wish I had them out.

I've had strep throat, I'm sure, many times, but I don't think for about 10 years..

I've probably had antibiotics once a year or two for chest colds or sinus infections over the past 8 years. Zithromax is my antibiotic of choice...no side effects UC-wise, and works well.

*Heather* Status: mild flare enemas tapered to every 2nd night

I never have had strep throat. I did have a peritonsillar abscess that required a tonsillectomy...but this was after having UC for about a year and a half and was when I was an adult.

I had one ear infection when I was a pretty young kid that I can remember. I have had one ear infection as an adult. They suck.

I have had more infections since getting UC than before it seems...

I had strep countless times as a kid and practically lived on antibiotics... A family member (cousin) was a carrier... I had ear infections as a small child - food allergies at the time (narrowed down to chocolate) caused those.

I had Mono/Tonsillitis when I was about 15 or 16....and also Measles when about 16 or 17...

I now have constant tinnitus but I am not sure that is related to my infections....(I played drums in a rock band for about 6 years and fired a lot of firearms)...so it could be caused from sound damage....
34 yr old male. UC for 14 years. Started left-sided, most recent scope shows pancolitis. 30mg pred (as of 2/01/09), 12x pills Asacol per day, 1mg Atavan per day (anxiety) when needed, 20mg paxil per day, Super-omega fish oil pills - 1x per day, Flax oil pills - 1x am, 1x pm, Culturelle probiotics - 2x am, 1x pm, Spinach and sunflower seed diet (moderated recently due to kidney stones). Multivitamin. Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (and I am still more afraid of my UC!!) "I poop in the woods because I can"
