During my recent flare-up, I have lost about 30lbs. I wanted to know if anyone was taking any protein shakes for added protein and calorie intake to help increase your weight? Please advise and let me know which brand. Also when and how often do you drink the shakes.

If you start using one, read the label very carefully to make sure there aren't any artificial sweetners, as these can make UC symptoms a lot worse.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Agree with fruitgirl. Also, if you choose whey protein, look for a whey protein isolate rather than a concentrate. Egg white protein shake mixes - especially when sweetened with stevia - can be a good choice. Better yet, check out Absorb Plus predigested shake mixes that supply nutrition while giving the gut a rest.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999.
Maintenance dose sulfasalazine. Probiotics, l-glutamine, vitamin D and fish oil caps. George's aloe vera juice. Oregano oil antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal. Mostly grain-free and dairy-free diet. Long-term remission with only minor blips.

Regarding the absorb plus (which I think is a good option) - I would recommend obtaining the sample flavors first to find out which ones you like. I ordered the french vanilla and find that I can't stand the flavor - absolutely awful to my palate. The other flavors were OK.

This may be important because absorb plus is not cheap. No point in spending good money on something you won't be able to drink!

These shakes were ok'd by my son's gastroenterologist, as they were developed by a physician for folks needing to gain weight, going through gastric issues, etc.  My son has U/C and has recently flared and lost 20 lbs., that he really couldn't afford to lose as he is 19, tall and thin anyway. We haven't received these yet, (should get in the next day or so) but I am willing to give them a try to get some weight back on him.

Good Luck

I also looked for a good protein mix without all the bs they add in it. I found this one
I have used it for about two months now and with lifiting weights I have added about 12 lbs! I doesnt taste that good but to find something I can use without problems is great.

I appreciate all the quick replies. I will give those supplements a try. Also, has anyone tried Muscle Milk?
