There's been a lot of discussion in the past few days about pregnancy and UC.  Here's an article titiled 'Management of the Pregnant IBD Patient' I found that was published in the IBD journal in December 2008.  I thought some of you might like to read it.

If that doesn't work, go here,
and you can click on the article to get it.

It's in PDF format.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Thank you for posting this! While we are being wise about having more kids, I have some SERIOUS baby fever (my youngest is already 2.5 and I had hoped I would have had another by now, before all of this UC crap hit the fan, pardon the pun!) and can't stop thinking about when/if/how we might be able to have more children. I am anxious to read through this! Hopefully things will work out for us at some point, but I have to admit I am scared to death of it.

Just to encourage you, or scare you to death...LOL, I am pregnant with #9 and have UC. This is the first child I have carried since my diagnosis in 07. I am using my meds which are supposedly safe during pregnancy. I am at 26 weeks and I have been flaring for about a month. Prior to that, I would have an occasional minor flare. The doc increased my meds for 10 days. It helped but it has not gotten it completely under control. However, I don't see the UC affecting me in any worse way than it did when I was not pregnant.

Thank you Taterbug! Wow-9 kids! That is amazing!! I have a hard enough time keeping up with my two, so 9 seems unreal to me! (though everyone tells me that once you reach a certain threshold, it doesn't seem to increase the workload as much when you add another child) Congratulations on your latest addition-that is very exciting!

I was encouraged to see the information in the article about Humira. While it isn't approved yet for UC, I am hoping it will be before we decide to try again, and maybe it will remain an option for me, at least for part of a pregnancy.

One thing at a time, but I hope to be able to go down the pregnancy road again at some point!

I had both of my children while having UC. I was taking Asacol with my first. After him I had a huge flare and ended up in the hospital for 14 days on Cyclosporine Azathioprine, and Prednisone. I finally got it under control. While I was pregnant with my daughter, I had a flare and was in the hospital on iv steriods. I also was on Azathioprine and Asacol. Afterher, I was put on Remicade. My kids have not had any effects from the drugs. I was never completely well during pregnancy, but many people do better.
Ginger 34
UC for 17 years
Remicade over 2 years every 7 weeks
Azathioprine
Asacol
I have also taken prednisone, cyclosporin, asulfazine, ruwasa, steriod enamas.
