I am still taking 40mg a day of prednisone with no plans of a taper at this point but I really want off this drug.

I had success with Colazal for a couple of years. Stains the toilet though. I never had much luck with the asacol so that's why I was switched to it.

The Uc forum has a lot of information regarding Colazal. Search some of the older posts regarding this medication. I was on Asacol for 12 years when it stopped working for me so the doc switched me to Colazal and I am able to tolerate it much better.

I switched to generic Colazal (balsalazide disodium) last year, but I'm also on Remicade so I'm going to attribute any changes to that. I have read on this forum that Colazal works better than the generic form for some. Also, Asacol is good for right-sided UC, whereas Colazal is good for left-sided UC.

Original Colazal has helped me to achieve remission better than any other 5-ASA med to-date. Due to insurance requirements I tried the generic (Watson pharma) this past fall, but it made me sick-- so beware! Several of us posting here who rely on 5-ASA med alone have had trouble with generic balsalazide & needed to get back on original Colazal. Those who take the generic in combo with Imuran or Remicade seem not to fare differently than with the original-- probably because the immunosuppressant controls their symptoms. Good luck with your change from Asacol & let us know how you're doing. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently recovering from March flare in sigmoid colon)

I requested to NOT have the generic Colazal.  It would have been $20 cheaper but for right now it wasn't worth the risk to me.  If an an $20 makes me feel better I'll pay it gladly!!!

The difference in your co-pay for the brand-name med is very reasonable, another reason to stick with it. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

I had no success with Asacol and then responded to Colazol. It's basically the same drug, I was told it's just a different delivery system.

If Colazal doesn't work don't be afraid to try Sulfasalazine, it seems to work better for me than the others have so far, it's also cheap to boot since it been out since the 1970's.

I've been on generic Colazal since it first went on the market.  I suppose it works, not sure if it is the Colazal working or the 6MP or the combo..  who knows?  As long as I feel good..lol.
