It sounds as if the Acetarsol and Mesalazine are not getting you into remission, and the steroids are the only thing helping you with your flare. It looks as if you've had limited relief from steroids, and long-term therapy with them is not appropriate anyway.
Has your consultant talked with you about
Azathioprine or 6-MP? I believe in the UK sometimes they will give a few infusions of Remicade to induce remission while the immunosuppressants (Aza or 6-MP) are taking effect, but I've been told by some of our other members that long-term Remi therapy is not an option there. Ask your consultant about
all the options, then make your decision.
If it does come to surgery, it isn't the end of the world. We have several members living full, active lives after having the j-pouch surgery.
