Hi Everyone,

I have been in remission for almost a year and doing great! Now I am having some symptoms and they are coming on strong. Twice in the past week I have had to run to the bathroom, i sit down, start going and then at the same time start throwing up. Anyone ever experienced anything like this? It is not food poisoning as the incidents are very isolated and about 5 days apart...i suppose i should call the dr tomorrow :-/

Thanks for any input!

Yes, that has been my problem for awhile now. I only threw up once, but mostly sit there while going with the wastebasket near my feet and my mouth watering and me gagging and my stomach lurching until I am done. As soon as I relieve the poo, and go lie down a few minutes the nausea goes away.
It has me baffled also.  I am not in remission though.
Ulcerative proctitis. On Asacol 3 3x a day, and Meslamine enemas nightly.
Now on Hydrocortisone suppositories for 2 weeks.

Urgency is still my biggest problem.  rarely have D, but extreme gas and urgency at any given time.

Hi...I've never had that experience, but if it's something new, you should call the doctor and get it checked out in case there's something else going on that's not related. I see you're on Nexium...is that for an ulcer or reflux?.

Vomitting can apparently be related to a flare, I guess it would depend on how strong one's reactions are to nausea or peristalsis....etc.

I know when I'm starting to flare and the inflammation is very low in the rectum, I have horrific nausea....I don't have the feeling that I have to vomit when I'm on the toilet, but I do afterward when it feels like my whole insides are doing flips and turns and in total spasm mode.

I sure hope it's nothing other than a symptom that's fleeting.

By chance are you pregnant or expecting your period soon?

Keep us posted as to how you're doing.

Thanks for your responses...

I will call my doctor tomorrow...I do have GERD and often feel nausea if i have not eaten for a while. This could be related to the acid reflux.

I also have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis by one dr and chrons by another...i wonder if this is a new symptom??? I will keep you updated with what my dr says

I'm wondering if something like dicyclomine would help with the nausea.

I know what you mean about not eating....it helps me.

Difficult when your diagnosis is elusive....how does one doctor think it's CD...based on blood tests or location or symptoms?

I dont think it is serious i would not worry too much about it.

I have been throwing up once a week when going to pass stool during my april-may flareup. I would sit down and then could feel the stool pass a certain point in my colon and bam i would heave and throw up. My theory is that the nerves in the colon are connected somehow with the upper digestive tract and when the body has a lot of inflammation in the colon is thinks it could be food so it throws up what is currently in the stomach as an automatic reaction. Could also be a reaction to medications you are taking for your flareup. I have reduced my pred intake over the last few weeks and the vomiting has stopped although the nausea is still there.

Yes, when I had UC I would often throw up while sitting on the toilet. It's kind of tricky as both ends need the toilet at the same time! For me this was always a sign of a worsening flare.

As my flare worsened I started experiencing nausea and it became more frequent as the flare got worse. I didn't throw up much until the very worst of it, and yes a couple of times it was while I was on the toilet. I started keeping a "barf bag" in each bathroom and beside the sofa, etc. I find Broady's theory interesting, as I always wondered what was causing the nausea.

When I was in the worst of my flare I had some vomiting.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

This happens to me probably about once a week average. I now have a double liner in my bathroom wastepaper basket, and I keep a couple of Zofran pills in the bathroom within reach in case of unexpected problems. I find that the Zofran takes 4 minutes to kick in so I keep breathing deep and sweating alot... most of the time I end up throwing up anyway. I thought it was just me... didn't realize other people were having this problem. What a terrible way to live.. :(
Presently on: 600 mg. Remicade every 4 weeks
                   Venofer infusion every 4 weeks
                   B12 every 4 weeks
                   15 mg. Methotrexate/injection weekly
                   12 Asacol daily
                   10 mg. Celexa daily
                   Zofran as needed

My doctor wanted me to come into the ER today for fluids and a CT scan (i have no clue of what?!?!)

I have started keeping extra plastic bags next to the toilet...it is just so strange after having UC for 8 years this is the first time this has ever happened! absolutely horrible.

I am in so much abdominal pain, but i am having such a hard time validating my symptoms to myself. I am planning on going in to the hospital tomorrow...DR seemed to think it could be an infection or a flare?? But did not sound as concerned as I would have thought....so trying to have positive thoughts...even though my fever hs not gone below 100 in 3 days :-/

Does sound like something else is going on, with that fever.
I hope you feel better soon.

(never happened to me, but I have a tough stomach)

I do think you need to address this- At my worst I was running a fever about 101 and throwing up twice a day. I had bad stomach pains which the doctor attributed to my transverse colon and not my stomach. I ended up in the hospital and had to get Zofran and IV fluids and a transfusion- I had been flaring excessively bad for several months.

Not saying this will happen to you, but at first I didn't want to believe that it was the UC--- but in my heart I knew that it was. I was also on high dosage of 6mp which was causing the stomach pain. IT was a really horrible several weeks for me.

Then again, it could be totally unrelated to UC- so you do need to keep an eye out for any increased severity in your symptoms.

I wish you the best
