If I am on a certain dose of Asacol and I am doing pretty well, is there a point where maybe I can just take it twice a day instead of three times? How do I know when or if I can safely do so? I don't want to risk a flare but I have bad hairloss and I forget to take the pills sometimes.

I switched to twice a day a long time ago, since I just couldn't remember to take it mid-day, no matter what!
I take three, twice a day. I'm told my scopes show it has helped heal my colon, but flares still happened.

Bad flare in March, used prednisone. Humira denied, started Remicade 4/12 and doing great~

By twice a day, do you mean the dosage you're at? or to just drop 3 out of your daily regimen?

I would think that with your slight inflammation, you could reduce the dosage somewhat....maybe to 6...eventually....but you would have to taper to there.

I've taken twice a day for 20 years.....I've pretty much stayed at 6 for most of it, and increased once to 8 daily for a few months, then tapered back down to 6.

You could do 8 daily....4 morning, 4 evening. If you were wanting to taper to 6, you should only drop one pill a, it'll take a few weeks.

You should also be on rectal meds to get the lower part of the rectum inflammation down and then taper them to maintenance.

One thing, finding a maintenance level will allow you to increase during flares if you need to...but I would think that all you might need is to increase rectal meds. If the supps aren't enough, then the enemas would be your next decision.

~UC meds: Asacol (3 x2 daily); Salofalk enemas nightly for flares & taper to maintenance
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed; Ranitidine (reflux);  Effexor XR 75mg(depression);  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~vitamins/minerals/supplementsProbiotics....(Natural Factors Protec, Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls). @ bedtime
~various digestive enzymes as needed
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)

Yes, I would like to go down from 9 to 6. I don't like being on such a high dose.

Thanks for your input quicy, I agree with everything you said. I am going to mention it to my doctor and see what she thinks. I wonder if my inflammation would get better if I started using the suppositories again. I am just tired of using all these medications. I wish I could stop everything. Maybe I can take 6 Asacol and one Canasa nightly.

I cut my Colazal from nine a day to six several months ago and am doing fine.  I also cut my 6MP from 75 mgm to 50 mgm one day and 25 the next.  Not crazy about the low white count from the 6MP.

Update 11/03/08...finally in remission!!  Hope I don't jinx myself.  Off the prednisone since 11/01/ see if I can stay off for longer than two weeks.  Other meds: 6MP (75 mgm), colazal (6 per day), Benicar and Toprol (high blood pressure meds), Probiotic (2 per day), fish oil capsule and multi-vitamin and calcium with vitamin D.
