I won't even attempt to repost my entire story...but to try to summarize...I had a colonoscopy and barium enema in March that showed moderate UC up to 35 cm.  They couldn't get any higher in my colon due to inflammation and concerns over perforating my colon.  I landed in the hopsital for three days due to dehydration, pain, etc.  Started Entocort and was referred to a specialist. He ordered a stool sample that showed white blood cells.....that means inflammation right?  Two weeks ago, I had another colonoscopy done by the specialist.  I spent the week before the colonoscopy chained to the toilet with much bleeding and pain.  Guess what he found?  Nothing! My colon looks completely healthy and biopsies showed no inflammation.  He says he didn't even see evidence of diverticular disease which they had found at the last colonoscopy and via cat scan when I was hospitalized.  He is now suggesting I have IBS.  I would LIKE to have IBS versus UC, but I am very confused.  He kind of acted like everyone including my gastroenterologist who referred me to him and myself had overacted.

Does colitis go away?  Why where there white blood cells if there was no inflammation?  I thought bleeding did not happen in IBS?  Any input would be appreciated.

Sounds strange for it to disappear that quickly. Does IBS cause inflammation? Do you have symptoms? You were chained to the toilet but now your colon is perfectly normal? How is that possible?
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa 2x Daily
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)

That doesn't sound right. Did they have an explanation about those strange results???? Did they check your stool for parasites and foodborne illnesses like salmonella, E Coli? Those can cause bleeding sometimes. It would also explain the WBC in your stool. Those are a non specific indicator of possible infection or inflammation. Have they checked your for celiac disease? Colitis can go into remission but usually your symptoms disappear too, or so I thought. IBS is NOT supposed to cause bleeding, so you are correct with that. Your story sounds VERY similar to mine ( including symptoms) but in the reverse! Four years ago, I had a CT Scan that said I had inflammation so they admitted me into the hospital and did a colonoscopy. The colonoscopy was normal, so they said it was IBS. But I had experienced bad episodes with bleeding. So, jump ahead 4 years to last December when I got really sick, went to the ER, they did a CT scan and said I had diverticulitis but after 3 weeks and antibiotics, the diarrhea did not clear up. I went in for another colonoscopy and they said I had diverticular colitis.... That's my story. I hope you are feeling better and get some answers very soon!

Maybe you have some kind of food sensitivity? Just throwing it out there.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol/5ASA 6x400 mg maintenance for 20+ years; used prednisone & Rowasa for flares.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated wheat/gluten from my diet. Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion).
Bad flare in March, used prednisone. Humira denied, started Remicade 4/12 and doing great~

There is something called self limiting colits...google it.

In additon the the visual all's clear, did the pathology confirm this?

There are also some that have episodes of colits and when in remission there is no trace (including pathologically) that one ever had UC...I seem to be one of those (very thankful for that).

I've had 4 different GI's mention that IBD can flar or be in remission anywhere from a day to yrs, although it seems a little odd that your inflammation would clear up so quickly, it's certainly not impossible, your inflammation may have been mild enough for that to happen.

Bleeding can happen with IBS if you have a bleeding hemheroid, otherwise bleeding is not a symptom of IBS in general.
