I have ulcerative colitis and was told I have low testosterone. It seems that from everything I've read that this is common with those of us that have UC. Has anyone else had this problem? I was given a prescription for AndroGel pump, has anyone used this before?
Any info. on this would be appreciated.

i also saw that there are correlations between low testosterone and UC. There are also correlation with UC and low DHEA (another hormone related to testosterone), low Vit D levels...

I had very low testosterone from a pituitary tumor...actually that is how it was originally discovered because of some sexual side effects - my doc ordered blood work, saw the low testosterone, then ordered an MRI....found a tumor on my pituitary gland.

I had it removed via endonasal surgery - they go up your nose into your brain and remove the tumor...my testosterone came back to normal within a few weeks, and my prolactin levels (which were skyrocketing - same amount as a woman who is breast feeding) went back down. The surgery was succesful....very painful recovery and something I would never want to do again, but ultimately the end result is my wife being pregnant, which is what we had been trying....so I would say it worked.

My surgeons said I could have had the tumor for a very long time....I am thinking it has something to do with my UC but I have not been able to combine the two....there is information out there if you google it but it is very hard to understand.
Stats:35 yr old male. UC for 15 years.
location:North Western PA
DX: Started left-sided UC, most recent scope shows pancolitis
Medications:20mg pred (as of 4/27/09), 12x pills Asacol per day, 100mg Imuran per day, 1mg Atavan per day (anxiety) when needed, 20mg paxil per day, Super-omega fish oil pills - 1x per day, Flax oil pills - 1x am, 1x pm, Culturelle probiotics - 2x am, 1x pm, Vitamin B-12 injections weekly.
Surgeries: Recent Endonasal brain surgery to remove non-cancerous hormone producing tumor on pituitary gland (and I am still more afraid of my UC!!)

you may think about eating smoked oysters or more beef if you can tolerate it because high zinc foods raises testosterone. Or maybe even take a zinc supplement but personally I like to get nutrients from foods. If you take a supplement I wouldnt go way over the RDA of it because it can be toxic. I have heard of people taking a gram of it a day and that cant be good.

I recently started back eating red meat and I will gladly start back eating oysters as well. I hope that it is the absence of these foods from my diet that has caused the drop in my testosterone and not a tumor on my pituitary gland. :)
I had a full work-up done by my internal medicine doc and was surprised that the only thing out of whack was my testosterone. I'm almost normal again!

What's this AndroGel Pump thingy? Sounds like one of these gadgets they try and sell you over the email for 'male enhancement' :)

At 35 I had the testosterone level of a 80 year old man, Im currently using the AndroGel pump which I hat using, its messy, sticky, Wife cant go near it , have to wait for it to dry ect. I diagnosed myself because I had sexual side effects and a lack of interest. Went to get it checked and I was prescribed 5 pumps for each arm daily. I also go for injections to attempt to shoot the level up and use the gel to maintain. Its a serious thing and messes with your feelings and emotions pretty hard. I recently went to a specialist to discuss begining 6MP for my crohns disease and He informed me that the 2 problems were related. So needless to say I just started the 6mp , and I have hopes that treating the crohns disease rather than the symptoms will return my body to creating testosterone and keeping my crohns in remission. Prior to that I had all of the scans to determnine the lack of natural testosterone being created in my body.

Diagnosed with Crohns 2003
Asacol 1600mg 3x a day
Prednisone 3rd cycle orally.
Hydrocortisone Enema's
Began 6MP 50MG on 5/15/09
Naturopathic remidies - Foundation Formula 2 capsules twice a day and Super EPA fish oil capsules. Also Probiotics. GI saw improvements since starting and scince last colonoscopy.
AndroGel and injections as needed for low testosterone.
Xanax as needed.
Pristiq 50MG daily.
