For the last week I have been have bloody diarrhea. Then towards the end of the week I started feeling anemic. I am still feeling a little anemic. In the last two days I've changed my diet to a gluten-free and lactose-free from just a lactose-free diet. I have also increased my dosage of fish oil from 3g to 5g. Today my stool has started to become more solid, but I realized the inside of the stool was maroon redish, while the outside was brown. Is this just asacol coloring or blood on the inside? And how much should I worry about my anemia?
Asacol-12 a day
1 Culturelle
1 Canasa
2 Fish oil supplements
1 Vitamin

Normally when a stool is dark red/brown it means that its from bleeding higher up in the colon and its dark because the blood had time to oxidize in the intestines. I don't know much about anemia because I've never had bloody stools but anemia for sure isn't a good thing and if you're worried about it, I'd see your GI.

Trying Colazal 3 750mg x2 (NOT for a flare, just some linger symptoms?)
I was kind of stupid and started taking the colazal two days before finals week started, so I went back to asacol for the week and will go back to Colazal starting 5/9. Shame on me!!

callalily - how have you escaped bloody stool.  If I did not have blood I would stop all this stupid medication and live with it.  Well, maybe not!  But I had IBS diagnosis years ago and lived with D sometimes and took Imodium and pepto bismal for years before I saw blood and then the ulceration and inflammation.  Hmmmm?  Just wondering.

I have no idea what to think about your weird stool, mumbles, but it's good that you're seeing your GI tomorrow.

Elaine, I've never had that much bleeding, either, even when I was going 15-20 times/day. I had some, but not all that much. It's just one of those weird things with UC. I've never really had pain, either. My main symptom is lots of extremely urgent diarrhea.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Mumbles in my opionion if your stools are getting more solid then that is always a good sign b/c even if you're bleeding it means inflammation is decreasing.

Callalily, So were you diagnosed with UC or colitis? I would assume UC has more inflamation due to the ulcers that develop? Either way consider yourself lucky b/c seeing all the blood than can come out at every restroom sit is really scary.

My doctor believes I may had what was considered UC for years.  I treated urgency and D with Imodium and pepto for so many years - mostly mornings just like UC.

When I had to go more than 3 times (for example) and it was D type I would take Imodium and be fine the rest of the day.  Lived that way for a long time until I had blood and finally went for a colonoscopy and was diagnosed with UC.  Probably all this started when I was about 35 and again at age 55 or so.  I WISH I was back to treating it that way - if it only could work for another 30 years!!

I was diagnosed with UC. The tissue in my colon was inflammed at starting to ulcerate.. Just because you have UC doesn't mean you always have to see blood. I was going 20 times a day with horrible pain, urgency and mucus, so I really didn't escape anything. I was put through pure hell for a year and a half.
