Do they always do a tissue biopsy when you get a colonoscopy?
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa 2x Daily
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)

The GIs should...I have about 30 biopsies done every colonoscopy...the most was 36.
I have a colonoscopy about every 3 years.
I would think that a doc would want to make sure there are NO precancerous cells in the colon....and inflammation, while most can be seen, some cannot.  I feel better knowing I have biopsies taken.

bacteria would probably show in a biopsy....stool samples would probably show it as well....

If my stool is normal, it means that my biopsy probably won't show any kind of bacterial cause as well. Is that right? I am always thinking that maybe my situation would be curable with an antiviral drug. I had biopsies in the past and they came back as chronic colitis, nothing about bactiera. Guess I am always hoping this isn't life long but in reality it almost definitely is. Everything points to UC.

chronic colitis and UC don't necessarily mean the same thing....although I'd rather have a definitive diagnosis.

We all have bacteria in our colons....both bad and good, but should be in a good proportion or a balanced flora.

You should still be on Canasa and the Asacol...why did you stop the Canasa?

Are you on any probiotics?

I have been taking probiotics and I am using Canasa every other night. I have been doing so much better lately, I wonder if I need to continue taking all this stuff? I was on antibiotics recently and it really firmed things up - if you know what I mean. I am always hopeful and I get the idea in my head that maybe I am cured but then I will get a streak of blood on the toilet paper and I am convinced I have hemmroids but I am sure it is the UC. I think the biopsy said chronic ulcerative colitis. It is old though. I am waiting on the recent results. Maybe it will shed some light on the situation. I just want a definitive answer. On an aside, since I started using Canasa, the awful toilet stains have returned. I was scrubbing the toilet this morning and they wouldn't come off. I guess if you are lazy and don't put bleach in the bowl they are really hard to brush off. Ill have to bleach it in the morning, I hate seeing the stains, it looks like someone had the splatters. smilewinkgrin

Hi...well, I'd hate to burst your bubble, but chronic means forever. There is no cure for UC....so, accepting that fact will go far for you.

Chronic colitis....probably the report has maybe classic symptoms of UC, depending on the formation of the cells.....and the fact that there are already changes in the cells...probably has it as an IBD anyway...

You should be on the Canasa daily at least...

Yeah, the stains can be bad, but I don't use bleach in the water...you might want to try one of those pucks you can put in the tank rather than pouring bleach.

The under rim ones are worst...I clean the seat daily, wash the bowl twice a week, or more if necessary.

I think the Canasa...being a type of oil, can make the stains worse....but I'm just guessing on that. The other thing...your type of water could be an added culprit.

I already have the puck in the tank. I have to pour something in the bowl and give it a good brush. smurf

I am so mad at myself because I just talked to my doctor and I forgot all of the questions I wanted to ask her. I didn't even ask the most basic questions like, could I have Chrons? She said everything was as expected, no precancerous changes... I was thankful about that because I had a precancerous polyp a couple years ago and since I have been thinking "what if". She said the inflammation is extremely mild and that I should keep taking my maintenence meds. She said it will get better after it has had more time to heal. She said to use the Canasa when I feel I need it and that I can try decreasing the dose of Asacol but to keep an eye on things. I guess if I notice that I am flaring I will have to go back up to the dose I am on. I am going to try going down to 6 per day. I will use Canasa at night - clean the toilet daily. Seems like I have to test to find the perfect balance so I am not constantly overmedicating myself.

Thank you for all your help. You help so many people on this board. If you didn't tell me to use Canasa 2x a day a long time ago, I might still be in that awful flare.

Last night I was freaking out with the tissue culture thing. I had convinced myself that I had some kind of bacteria. I was kind of hoping that was the case because then maybe it would have a more simple fix. Now I have to drop this whole idea that I have a bacteria. I am still hopeful that someday I can get off these meds. Maybe I can take lialda... that would make me feel like I am less drug dependent.

Hi...Thank you for the kind words!

It's good the doc gave you a call back, but it's easy to forget questions unless they're written down. Somnething you may want to consider for the future.

The fact that your inflammation is mild is good, but you should deal with it effectively now than wait until it's progressed to the point of needing stronger or more 5ASA meds.

You're not overmedicating yourself...why would you think you are?

I realise there's some inner drive for you to feel you shouldn't be on meds, but how many times would you need to prove to yourself you can't? That's the magic question that you may have to experience to find out.

If you were to taper the Asacol...do not do it any faster than by 1 less pill a week and probably don't go lower than on 6 daily.

Lialda won't treat the rectum ....and it's 1200mg per pill....so, you won't be on any less medication than you would need in order to keep the inflammation above the rectum or sigmoid nice and quiet.
But, maybe the Lialda will work better for you...you won't know until you try.

I think you have some thinking to do regarding your perspective on taking meds. I tried to get off them...but soon enough realised I'm a med-lifer..but I'm on minumal meds to keep things in check. I increase only rectal meds...and since your IBD is limited to the rectum...you really WANT to keep it limited there and deal with the inflammation directly.

I'm happy you had success with the Canasa when increased....it's an option for you if needed. If the Canasa isn't enough, you may eventually have to "graduate" to the enemas.

You could try using dishwashing soap to clean the toilet rather than bleaching it daily....I'm wondering if bleach itself is what reacts with the 5ASA???

It's awesome your biopsy report has come back with no precancerous cells.

Hope tomorrow is a feeling better day.
