You're in the middle of a medium flare. You wake up on a particular morning, and feel like your in remission.  No morning D.  No stomach aches.  No gurgling belly.  No blood, no urgency.

Stays that way the whole day. You wake up the next day, and wham.  You're right back to square one.  What's up with that?  That happens to me at least once a month.  Is this a teaser or what??

(I did nothing or ate nothing out of the ordinary the day before and meds were exactly the same)
Ulcerative proctitis. On Asacol 3 3x a day, and Meslamine enemas nightly.
Now on Hydrocortisone suppositories for 2 weeks.

Urgency is still my biggest problem.  rarely have D, but extreme gas and urgency at any given time.

Sounds about par for the course.  It really does get old after a while - a game of cat and mouse.

For me, a good stretch of feeling quite good is often warning of what's yet to come.  Not sure why, but a stretch of normal BM's, weight gain, etc usually means a flare is coming...

I get this and sometimes it is for more than a one day.
No urgency, no blood, no cramps or pain. Just like nothing has happened and then boom I am sick again.

Cruel life hehe... This so amazing how can this happen?

Yes, that happened to me and it still happens to me. I asked my GI about that once and he said that this happens to some Uc'ers on occasion and it's pretty much the nature of this beast. Frustrating isn't it??

I've been told by 4 GI's that remission and flares can last from a day to yrs.

This is so me right now! I was so confused because always before I am either in remission and feeling great or total full flare. For the last three weeks I have had days at a time where I feel great and have no BM or a nice, normal, formed BM and then BAM two days of horrible pain and D with mucus and some blood. I never experienced bad pain with my flares before. Occasional "contractions" right before going to the bathroom--yes, but not HORRIBLE pain. Yesterday the pain was so bad I was sure it was another kidney stone and took a Lortab to get relief. I was starting to think something other than UC was going on like my appendix or something. Now I know other people can have intermittent symptons and pain. I added Canasa two weeks ago and we're trying to head off a full-on flare but the last two days have been bad. Taking immodium helps me a lot. I see my GI in late June.

I still worry about it being something else though b/c I've read appendix pain can be intermittent and give you D and also kidney stone pain made me sick.

Sorry Mommypooh that u r not feeling too great & experiencing all this pain. i hope it passes soon.
i remember during my last flare i would also get these contractions/cramps in my lower belly right before i had to pass a BM.
in the hospital they did not want to give me opioids (like Lortab) because they can slow down motility. but if u r in bad pain, u gotta take something. Just be careful using Immodium at the same time which also slows down the Gut)
Regarding your concern of ur pain being from appendicitis, the doc would prob do a CT scan, although appendicitis can usually present with Fever, Nasea/vomiting, diarhea (usually not bloody) & specific pain in the Right Lower Quadrant. Bloody stool is most prob from UC.
The CT scan can also show Kidney stones. But if ur pain gets relieved with BM i wouldn't think that u have kidney stones.
CTscans also give us some radiation. ( when i was recently hospitalized i had 2 CT scans done, then i was told by GI that CTscans are worthless in UC)
How long have u been on 6MP? i was recently px'ed it. how do u feel since u've been on it? i am taking 75mg now but my doc wants to go up more. (TMPT test showed normal metabolism)

Let us know how u r feeling

I have been on 6MP about a year and Lialda 8 months. Been in remission 8 months. Hard to tell if it was the 6MP or Lialda b/c remission started at the 3 month mark of 6MP and as I started Lialda. May have been a result of both. Anyway I think trouble came b/c GI wanted me to reduce to 3 Lialda a day and on my own I cut 6MP from 75mg to 50mg because the dose is based on weight and I had lost 30 pounds. Anyway, it was only a few weeks after those medication adjustments that I started having "contractions" and loose stool. I went back to full dose and at the first sight of blood I started back on Canasa. After I take immodium, I'll usually have two to three great days. I took some earlier when I could not stay off the toilet for more than 10 min. at a time and I have had no D or pain since. I guess that means flare pain if I've had no pain since taking immod. and calming it down in there. Lortabs only constipate me if I take several doses in a day. I would take a little constipation right now HA HA!
