Hi, I'm new here!  So glad to have found this site to relate to others that seem to be going through what I do everyday.  I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis when I was 6 weeks pregnant (2007) and have been on canasa suppositories ever since.  I was then put on Lialda twice a day on top of the canasa which I do once a day (night).  Lialda was causing my hair to break terribly, so my GI took me off and my symptoms have returned.  I am now on asacol which I just started last night and did not sleep well AT ALL.  Have any of you been on this and if so, what were you side effects?  I'm going for another colonoscopy soon b/c I haven't had one since I've been diagnosed.  I am just so sick of living with this! mad

Hi..welcome to the forum!

I would say the process of being pregnant, hormonal changes, bowel disease and partly the meds have contributed to your hair fragility.

How much Lialda were you on? How much asacol are you on at this time?

Sleep patterns might change with some meds changes...but that can also happen with flaring, hormonal changes, weather, food we ingested, stress, etc.....

Have you any synptoms at this time?

Where in the colon is your UC...throughout or limited?

*Heather* Status: mild flare enemas tapered to every 3rd night
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~UC meds: Asacol (3 x2 daily); Salofalk enemas nightly for flares & taper to maintenance
~Bentylol (dicyclomine) 20mg as needed; Ranitidine (reflux);  Effexor XR 75mg(depression);  Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma)
~vitamins/minerals/supplementsProbiotics....(Natural Factors Protec, Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls). @ bedtime
~various digestive enzymes as needed
~URSO for PSC (or PBC) 500mg X 2 daily (LFTs back to NORMAL!!)
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS"  worth it !!!

Thank you quincy :)  I definitely agree that my body has been through many changes since the pregnancy, however, my hair loss that i dealt with around 3 months postpartum, was definitely related to my pregnancy...the hair breakage seems to be from the lialda b/c ever since stopping the lialda, my hair that has broken seems to be growing in again, thankfully.  I have also stopped blow drying or doing any other damage.
I was on 1.2 gm of Lialda...1 pill in morning and 1 in evening.  I am on 1000mg of Canasa in the evening.  Ever since stopping the Lialda, all my symptoms have returned.  Rectal bleeding, urgency, and frequent bowel movements with some pain the rectal area.  When I was diagnosed in '07, my UC was only 1" inside my rectum.  This is why so many previous doctors had missed it.  I only had colonoscopies so they passed right by.  Since then, I feel like it has progressed.
I really feel like the asacol is the cause of my sleeplessness last night.  I am also very dizzy and nauseous this morning.
I am glad my GI wants to schedule a colonoscopy soon so we can see how much this has progressed.
Do you feel like the probiotics have helped you throughout this?  I am thinking of asking my GI about them.  Anything to help me b/c I have a 10 month old and not only is this limiting my life, but now hers.
BTW, my doc's logic is the same as yours!  Maybe we have the same one?

I am on Asacol and I have lost a lot of hair. Luckily, I had tons of hair to begin with so I look like I have average amount now. I would like to get my hair back to healthy but I'd rather be UC/UP free so I deal with the hairloss.
Diagnosed with mild proctitis in March 2007: Treated with Canasa (as needed)
December 08: Began treating with Asacol 400mg (9/day) + Canasa 2x/day - Anemic
May 09: Off Canasa, taking Asacol (9/day)
Back on Canasa every other night + Asacol (9/day) + Probiotics + Iron

I agree with you notsosicklygirl. I am definitely thinking of going back on the Lialda b/c I can't deal with these side effects from Asacol. The Lialda did cause extreme exhaustion for me. The minute I stopped, I felt awake again and out of that fog, but I totally agree...rather be symptom free!
Diagnosed Ulcerative Proctitis in October '07
Canasa 1000mg '07-present
Lialda 1.2gm (2x daily) '07-'09 stopped b/c of hair breakage
symptoms returned...
Asacol 400mg (3pills 2x daily) May '09 (1st night experienced sleeplessness, next morning dizziness and nausea)

I've never had a colonoscopy, only rigid and flexi sigmoidoscopy. My UC is confined to 2/3 inches in the rectum (Proctitis) and this is how it was diagnosed. I've been on Asacol/mesalazine since I was diagnosed in Jan 08 and never experienced any adverse side effects. However I'm not loving the side effects from the Prednisolone and Azathioprine at this point in time!!
22 year old female, from the UK.
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis Jan '08, Proctosigmoiditis Jan '09.
Hospitalised Jan '09 for 3 days IV Hydrocortisone - had no effect!
Hospitalised Feb '09 for 7 days (5 days - IV Hydrocortisone)
Currently taking daily:
40mg Prednisolone tablets
100mg Azathioprine
1g Acetarsol suppository every other night (Previously taking 5mg Pred suppository)
1g Mesalazine granules x 2
Motilium (anti sickness)
7.5mg Zopiclone (taken when needed for sleeping)
10mg Citalopram (anti-anxiety/depression)
Probiotic Multivitamins

no side effects from Asacol for me after 5 years.
Ulcerative proctitis. On Asacol 3 3x a day, and Meslamine enemas nightly.
Now on Hydrocortisone suppositories for 2 weeks
Doc now has me on prescription Pepcid, and Questran. Just started that 05/15, so will wait and see.
Urgency is still my biggest problem, and extreme gas.  Blood is now gone.
