What could make me feel worse than having UC? How about gaining back 8 lbs that it took me 4 months on weight watchers to lose plus another 4 lbs!
I can't WAIT to be off the prednisone already!

The worst part about having taken prednisone for me wasn't the weight gain or the moon face. Those are just temporary. It was the fact that prednisone ages the body. That's something I can never get back.

Geez, Joy - you had to tell me that!  LOL  I will be 69 in a couple of weeks - don't need to be any older!

Actually, I thought the moonface would not bother me much but it does and will be happy to get rid of it.  I have also gained - but only 6 lbs. in 3 months.   I am already WAY overweight so it is no fun for sure!  BUT - the alternatives (like UC pain, etc.) are worth it!

Gosh, I've been there too Shelly! I lost 30 lbs on WW only to have it come back while taking Pred. The moon face was also terrible; I finally lost both the weight and moonface in about 6 months after stopping pred.

Carol, I was on WW before the prednisone and had lost 9lbs over like 3 months and I gained 12lbs on prednisone so fast it feels like overnight! Gosh if the UC didn't make me feel bad, the weight gain certainly does! Back to WW as soon as I am off the pred!

I did 17 pounds in 12 weeks on pred. Having barely eaten for months because I became so ill waiting for a diagnosis I just became crazy about food on pred. Just 12 hours after starting on it I remember working my way through about 40 little Milky Way bars, and continued from there. Couldn't get food off my mind...! After I'd finished on the pred I found it hard to stop eating, I guess because my stomach had stretched and it had become such a habit. I'm starting to get things under control by obsessively weighing myself each day and recording the weight on a little app on my iPhone. Don't hate pred too much - it's not its fault that it isn't the perfect drug and it has saved millions of lives.
Ulcerative Colitis: diagnosed as moderate pan-colitis August 2008. Prednisolone saved me.
Current meds: Azathioprine (100mg); Asacol (too much - 6 tablets twice a day); Pentasa enemas and suppositories as needed (both great).

I gained 40 pounds in 3 months on pred but I was 100 lbs before so now I am 140 lbs.

Just try to snack on something healthy. It is hard but stay strong.

UGH-I completely understand your frustration!!! I gained 50 pounds in 3 months while on pred, and now, going on 8 months since being off of it, I still am only down about 10 of those. As if all of the other side effects aren't bad enough, you have to deal with this.

Temporary or not, the weight gain is a very tough thing to deal with. I felt like I should wear a t-shirt that said, "I don't normally look this bad" or something. It was awful!!!

I am going through this right now. I gained 10 lbs in about a week and it is making me absolutely miserable. I pride myself in exercising often and had just lost about 30lbs (that i needed too from previous prednisone). Last night I cried after weighing myself becuase it is just so frustrating to go from healthy to unhealthy so quickly and really loose all control. The only thing we can do is continue to eat as healthy as possible and exercise when not complteley exhausted...hmph :-/

The thing that drove me crazy is that I could hardly eat -- where the heck were the pounds coming from?! ;-)

That happened to me when I was pregnant. I gained 50 lbs with the first and 75 with the second. I was barely eating with the second and walking a lot. It seems my metabolism changed the moment I was pregnant. Thankfully, it went back to normal once I had the babies, and I quickly got back down to my normal weight.

I also gained weight with Prednisone, and I had the moon face. But like I said before, I'm more concerned with the long-term effects. Plus, I used to have a horrible skin inflammation issue right on my face. The moon face was nothing in comparison. Both the weight and the moon face went away once I was off the Prednisone.

Ugh. I only gained about 10, and lost about 5 of it but now I am stuck. Usually lo carb works for me, quickly, but it is not this time. And even with what I have lost again I cannot get rid of this thick barrel around my torso! What is that about??

I had been hoping to be twenty pounds thinner for a beach vacation next month with my old college buddies. Then I had to go on prednisone for a couple of months, so forget that. I'm so bummed.

At least I already have clothes in every different size.

Ha, Peety; I can commiserate with you! I just turned 50 and doggone it, I cannot lose that middle stuff. No matter what I do! I've tried every crunch in the world, plus exercise etc. and keep buying "Fit" magazine in hopes of getting rid of it. The other day I looked at the magazine laying on my end table, giggled, and decided that maybe I just need to resign myself to the middle stuff never going away. If you find a way, let me know...and I'll do the same! :-)

And it's not fleshy stuff, it's hard! I think the crunches built up muscles on the outside, and whatever is pushing them out is under there and that's what I can't get rid of.
I'd love to see an MRI of it.
