Im on remicaide (just had 2nd infusion) and 30 mg of prednisone. I developed a case of thrush after the 1st remicaide infusion and was put on oral nystatin. It seemed to clear thing up. I went a week ago for my 2nd infusion and now the thrush is back. Does anyone one else have trouble with thrush?? Is there anything else I can do to help get rid of it??

I don't, but my seven-month old son does! He's had it since the end of January. Each time we think it's gone, we quit using the nystatin and it comes back. I don't really like having to give him nystatin all of the time, so at his next doctor's appointment, I'm going to ask about systemic treatments, as they supposedly do a better job of knocking it out for good.

I've heard that probiotics can help keep thrush at bay, so maybe try using those, and taking a pretty high dose around your remi infusion.
Symptoms began in November 2008, ~4 weeks after giving birth to my son.
Eased for ~3 weeks in December, possibly b/c of probiotic use?
Returned in January 2009 (with a vengeance), diagnosed with pancolitis on January 30.
Currently taking Asacol (400mg 4 pills 3x daily), Rowasa nightly, Culturelle probiotic, and Zoloft (25 mg).

Hey PTL,

If left untreated it could lead to a complete yeast infection in the GI tract...probiotics daily can prevent oral thrush, so can eating yogurt daily. Probiotics daily and indefinitely can aid with IBD symptoms as well so if you're not taking one now then you should consider looking into's still better if you et your thrush treated with meds but you can still start on a good probiotic in the mean time since it won't interfere with any meds.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it! LOL :)

Nystatin's generally considered the safest of all the prescription antifungals. I agree that probiotic supplementation will help keep thrush from returning. Take probiotics away from antifungals and preferrably on an empty stomach.

An anti-candida diet can be a big help, too. And chances are if it's in your mouth, you have overgrowth in other places.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis spring 1999. Have been in remission for years with only a few minor blips.

I feel your pain. I had oral thrush during my last round of pred. After a round of Nystatin it came back a little bit. I upped my probiotics until it finally went away. Hope you can get rid of it!

I'm betting %100 it's the pred causing the thrush, not the Remicade. Steroids very often cause oral thrush, every time I've been on pred I get it. Nystatin will get rid of it, but it's pretty gross. I don't honestly know which is worse- the gross taste from the thrush, or the gross taste of the Nystatin itself! Once you get off steroids it should go away for good.

diagnosed with UC '02
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade-10mgs/kg- since 4/07
Imuran- 150mgs/day
various probiotics
Fiber supplement

I used to get thrush ALL the time.   I always took diflucan (i think thats spelled right, its a pill for yeast infections) and it cleared it up, cause i couldnt do that mouthwash stuff there is something in it that i am allergic to.
But i also discovered when i was pregnant that fresh pineapple will knock that stuff right out!
But you have to make sure that you clean all your silverware really really really good, i always used vinegar or bleach on mine, and get a new toothbrush or anything else that goes in your mouth.
You could also (and this is gross) be giving it to your partner through kisses and them not showing signs and then you just get it right back.

I have gotten thrush twice while on pred, both times triggered b/c i had to take antibiotics for a trip to the dentist (which i have to take for a heart murmur). it really is quite gross. My gi prescribed mycelex, which is a lozenge that you dissolve on your tongue 5x/day. sort of yucky, but the thrush was gone in about 3 days. I also took acidophiles, which i think helped too. i think cutting back on sugar is also supposed to help.
