There is lots of info to be learned about the drug. It helps many. Takes a long time to be therapeutic in your system, and need frequent blood testing to ensure you metabolize it effectively. Risks and rewards, loike all of the stuff we take..
See site:http://www.pfeist.net/ALL/mercaptopurine.html for science details

I'm glad somebody asked about 6 mp! I'm on "vacation" and don't have many opportunities to do much research. Doc says after the colonoscopy in August, he may want to switch treatments. 6 mp was mentioned as one possibility. That link had some interesting information (thanks!) but I still have a few questions for those that have experience with it. (I understand that everyones experience will be different)

1. What were your side effects?

2. Does it cause weight gain/loss?

Any info would me muchly appreciated :)

Keep in mind though that the things you read online about 6mp is based on the dosing for chemo/transplant patients and not the Uc patient.

6mp can cause mild hair loss. I have naturally super thick hair anyway but around a month of being on it I noticed more hair in the shower drain. But that stopped after a while and now my hair is back to being unruly again! :) Also it can cause nausea, fatigue and headaches. Typically once your body gets used to the med these side effects lessen. I never gained weight nor loss any from being on 6mp.

No real noticeable side affects for my daughter. Hair loss was one, but that could have also been from the ASA's. It stopped, and was never truly visible. Her Doc kept her on other meds at the same time, so it is hard to tell what it does or does not do. Ultimately it did not stand alone for her, as Remicade was the next drug in the war.

I was on 6MPs for a while. They had to monitor my liver I think... It is powerful but it worked for a good year or two for me. It is an immune suppressant so it can also knock you on your butt! Keep all you lab appointments when you start taking it. It is worth it.
UC (Pancolitis... 90%!) December 2001
Arthritis (2003)
Upper GI Ulcer (2006)
Osteopenia (2008)
Depression/Anxiety (2002)

Meds:Bump up every couple years... You name it, I've used it! Sulfasalizine, Asacol, Rowasas, Pentasa,
Remicade, 6mps... And now it looks like the once daily Lialda taken twice a day isn't enough...
Here comes Humera.

Mercaptopurine(6MP) works, or how I think it works correct me if I am wrong, is by interfering with the purine synthesis of cells. This attacks cells that are rapidly dividing. In our case it attacks the rapidly dividing immune system cells more readily because they are dividing very fast to attack the "infection"/infection in our colons. It sounds scary to me, but I may need it too.
Asacol-12 a day
1 Culturelle
1 Canasa
5g Fish oil supplements
1 Vitamin
1 B-12(for anemia)

Thanks for the info! I noticed most of the facts I found using internet searches were indeed for chemo patients so it's a bit confusing. Doc says we'll try the 6mp and yup you guessed it, if that doesn't work... remicade. But I have months to understand them both before the switch.

I just started 6mp 3 weeks ago and have started to feel the effects of the drug already.  The fatigue is a huge issue!!! I feel sooo tired and sluggish that I can barely stand up and the worst part about it is tht Im in a pretty bad flare and can;t really sleep at night so the fatigue is just building up.  Diziness is kind of an issue as well...if I sit for a while and then stand up, I feel like I need to just fall on my face.

Other then that everything seems ok...I just hope it works becauase I need something!
