So I was diagnosed with uc on march 31, 2009.  I was put on asacol.  Allergic.  Then put on Lialda.  Allergic.  Then put on Imuran(azathiaprine).  Allergic.  Seen a new GI doctor yesterday and I was very pleased with her.  My old GI was horrible and rude.  Anytime you ask him a question he would rolls his eyes.  He was in a big hurry.  I could go on and on.  Anyways,  the new doctor told me 50% of people who are allergic to 5 asa are allergic to imuran and 6mp.  Lucky me.  She wants to do a colonoscopy so she can see with her own eyes how bad my colon is.  I just had one on march 31st.  I'm kind of against it but she said it is necessary because there is one other immune supp. I can try(it starts with a M I can't remember the name).  But if my colon is bad I don't have 3 months for it to kick in.  She said that is most likely the case because I go to the bathroom 10+ times a day.  I'm getting very dizzy and really tired.  She doesn't want me to end up in the hospital because my colon is so bad while I wait for the meds to kick in.  She put me on pred.(I started today for a month).  She said I will most likely have to start remicade.  I'm so scared.  I hear all the horrible side affects and the cancers it may cause.  I'm only 29 and I have three children at home.  They get sick alot because they are school age.  I was just diagnosed with this two months ago and already the (big guns).  I'm scared any advice I would appreciate.  My colonoscopy is June 9th.  How long have some of you been on remicade?  Have you heard of someone being on that for ten+ years?  I don't want surgery really but I am preparing myself.  I also don't want to end up with ms or cancer from taking remicade for years(I was told I have to take it long term). If I could look into the future and see that I will get cancer or something else I will just have the surgery now.  Sorry I need to vent.

Your new doctor seems to be following all the correct protocol. I know you hate doing another colonoscopy but her reasons sound justified. You might not have 6 months for 6mp to kick-in but if the colon isn't that bad you can start the 6mp and maybe avoid the Remicade? Yes, if you opt for Remicade it is a long term treatment.

dx proctitis in 1987
dx UC in 1991, was stable until 1998

1998 started prednisone, asacol, pentasa, nortriptylene, ativan, 6MP, rowasa enemas and suppositories, hydrocortisone enemas, tried the SCD diet, being a vegetarian, omega 3s, flax, pranic healing, yoga, acupuncture, probiotics

2000 lost all my B-12 stores and became anemic

2001 opted for j-pouch surgery- now living life med-free

Some people progress really quickly.  At this point, is she looking at 6-MP?  If that's the case, I would ask to have it prescribed with the pred to see if it works before I'd have another colonoscopy.  If it doesn't work or you have an allergy to it, you're going to Remicade, right?  It wouldn't matter, anyway.  I mean, she's already asking you to wait nearly three weeks. . . .

GIs can treat by symptoms without seeing the colon, especially if the drug treatment doesn't change because of the colonoscopy, and in this case it doesn't seem likely.

The doctor said I can't take 6MP because if you are allergic to imuran(azathiaprine) you will be allergic to 6MP because they are basicly the same.  I can't remember the name of the other drug but it is like imuran and 6mp.  She said I will most likely have to do remicade.  She doesn't want me to end up in the hospital if I try the other drug and it takes so long to kick in.  I know I thought the same thing about putting me on it with the pred. because I'm waiting almost a month anyway but she said if my colon is that bad she said I don't have another 2-4 months to wait.  Then I need to start remicade right away.  I don't know!

I forgot to put the doctor wants to do the colonoscopy because she wants to see with her own eyes how my colon looks and then when I start remi or anyother med when she does anyother colonoscopy she can see if my colon is healing or getting worse.  I know I don't want one but it does make sense.  I usually don't bleed but after my colonoscopy I bleed for about a month(not bad) and I had pain on my upper right side.  I hate UC(HA HA).  Thanks everyone.

My doc told me she has some patients who have been on Remicade for 10 years or so or since it was approved, with no problems, but they are arthritis patients. Still, it's not ruined their health.

I hate UC too. I love Remicade.
49 year old female attorney, diagnosed UC/pancolitis 1985, no surgery but much suffering. Asacol maintenance for 20+ years; used prednisone & Rowasa for flares.  Probiotics (Ultimate Flora, 50 billion), salmon oil (omega-3) when I can remember.
August 2008 sought care of naturopathic doctor. Food sensitivity test showed wheat/gluten, other intolerances; eliminated wheat/gluten from my diet.
Bad flare in March, used prednisone. Humira denied, started Remicade 4/12 and doing great~ learning what normal is~ wow
